The Adjutant General of Massachusetts is the highest-ranking military official in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and is subordinate to the Governor of Massachusetts. The State adjutants general, Adjutant General is a member of the Governor's Cabinet and advises the Governor on military and emergency management matters. Major General (United States)
In the United States Armed Forces, a major general is a two-star general officer in the United States Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Space Force. A major general ranks above a brigadier general and below a lieutenant general. The pay grade of major general is O-8. It is equivalent to the rank of rear admiral in the other United States uniformed services which use naval ranks. It is abbreviated as MG in the Army, MajGen in the Marine Corps, and in the Air Force and Space Force. Major general is the highest permanent peacetime rank in the uniformed services as higher ranks are technically temporary and linked to specific positions, although virtually all officers promoted to those ranks are approved to retire at their highest earned rank. A major general typically commands division-sized units of 10,000 to 15,000 soldiers. William Schouler
William Schouler (December 31, 1814 – October 24, 1872) was an American journalist, politician and Adjutant General of Massachusetts during the American Civil War. Early life Schouler was born on December 31, 1814, in Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire, Scotland. He immigrated to the United States as a young child. His father had set up a silk print-works establishment on Staten Island and later established a similar business in Arlington, Massachusetts, where Schouler spent most of his childhood. Journalist and politician In 1842, Schouler became the owner and editor of the '' Lowell Courier'' for the next six years. Also during this time he served as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from Lowell. In 1845, Schouler headed a commission that investigated mill conditions in Lowell and recommended against a proposal to shorten the work day to ten hours. William Stopford (February 22, 1848 – September 11, 1928) was an English-born American military officer and politician who served as Adjutant General of Massachusetts and Mayor of Beverly, Massachusetts. Early life Stopford was born on February 22, 1848, in Manchester, England. His parents emigrated to the United States when he was two years old and settled in Boston's Roxbury neighborhood. At the age of 20, Stopford moved to Beverly to attend private school. Military career At the age of fifteen, Stopford attempted to enlist in a Hundred Days regiment, but was rejected due to his youth and small size. In 1865 he joined the Co D. Roxbury house guards. In 1875 he joined the 2nd corps of cadets of Salem as a private. He served in this command until 1885. After one year out of the militia he reenlisted.
