''Adjustable Wrench'', sometimes also ''The Adjustable Wrench'', is a composition for mixed chamber ensemble by American composer Michael Torke. It was composed in 1987. Composition The composition was composed in 1987 and had its first performance in November 24, 1987. It was commissioned by the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, in the United Kingdom, where it was premiered. The work was premiered by Ensemble Lontano, conducted by Odaline de la Martinez. It was later published by Hendon Music and Boosey & Hawkes, as most of Torke's compositions, and was first recorded by Kent Nagano conducting the London Sinfonietta under Argo Records. Structure The composition is in one movement and takes up to 11 minutes to perform. Michael Torke
Michael Torke (; born September 22, 1961) is an American composer who writes music influenced by jazz and minimalism. Torke was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he attended Wilson Elementary School, graduated from Wauwatosa East High School, and studied at the Eastman School of Music with Joseph Schwantner and Christopher Rouse, and at Yale University. Works Sometimes described as a post-minimalist, his most characteristically postminimal piece is ''Four Proverbs'', in which the syllable for each pitch is fixed and variations in the melody produce streams of nonsense words. Other works in this style include ''Book of Proverbs'' and ''Song of Isaiah''. An early piece where he first used a certain post-minimalist style was '' Vanada'', made in 1984. Staccato (; Italian for "detached") is a form of musical articulation. In modern notation, it signifies a note of shortened duration, separated from the note that may follow by silence. It has been described by theorists and has appeared in music since at least 1676. ''Color Music'' is a suite of five different compositions for orchestra by American composer Michael Torke. The suite is well known for its association with the composer's synesthesia. Conception When Michael Torke was studying musical composition in Yale University, he decided to start an early series of compositions "to celebrate without modulation a single color". As Torke himself puts it in the original program note for ''Ecstasic Orange'': Structure Even though Torke wrote many more pieces with color titles, the suite consists only of five compositions, written between 1984 and 1988. Syncopation
In music, syncopation is a variety of rhythms played together to make a piece of music, making part or all of a tune or piece of music off-beat. More simply, syncopation is "a disturbance or interruption of the regular flow of rhythm": a "placement of rhythmic stresses or accents where they wouldn't normally occur". It is the correlation of at least two sets of time intervals. Syncopation is used in many musical styles, especially dance music. Argo Records was a record label in Chicago that was established in 1955 as a division of Chess Records. Originally the label was called Marterry, but bandleader Ralph Marterie objected, and within a couple of months the imprint was renamed Argo.Cohodas, Nadine (2000). The London Sinfonietta is an English contemporary chamber orchestra founded in 1968 and based in London. The ensemble has headquarters at Kings Place and is Resident Orchestra at the Southbank Centre.
