Adjaran Legislative Election, 2012
Legislative elections were held in Adjara, an autonomous republic within Georgia, on October 1, 2012. Adjara elected its 18-member parliament, Supreme Council, in the region's 6th local legislative election since Georgia declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Background The 18-member Supreme Council of Adjara is elected for a 4-year term. Six of its members are elected through the majoritarian contest in single-mandate constituencies and the remaining 12 seats are filled through the proportional contest from those parties or blocs which clear 5% threshold. The last election, held in November 2008, was won by Georgia's ruling United National Movement, which had 15 seats in the Council. Christian-Democratic Movement (Georgia)
The Christian-Democratic Movement ( ka, ქრისტიანულ-დემოკრატიული მოძრაობა, ''k’ristianul-demokratiuli modzraoba'', KDM) is a socially conservative Christian-democratic political party in Georgia, founded in February 2008 and led by Giorgi Targamadze, formerly an Imedi TV anchor who had once been a Member of the Parliament of Georgia and a close ally of Aslan Abashidze, then a regional leader of Adjara. Shuakhevi
Shuakhevi ( ka, შუახევი ) is a small town in Georgia's Autonomous Republic of Adjara, 67 km east to the regional capital Batumi. Situated on the right bank of the Adjaristsqali River, it is an administrative center of Shuakhevi District, which comprises the town itself and 67 adjoining mountainous villages. The area of the district is 588 km2; population – 15,044 (2014). Khulo
Khulo ( ka, ხულო ) is a townlet ('' daba'') in Adjara, an autonomous republic in southwest Georgia, 88 km east of the regional capital Batumi, in the upper valley of the Adjaristsqali River. The town and adjoining 78 villages form the mountainous Khulo District (Rayon), which has an area of 710 km2 and a population of 23,327. The town, formerly known as Khula and Hulo, was a merchant place located on a medieval road that linked the neighboring region of Samtskhe-Javakheti to the Black Sea coast. The Khulo area has been inhabited since ancient times, almost from the Bronze Age. Cult monuments include the Thilvani Menhir, a simple megalith building/vertical column about 20 meters tall that archaeologists think was connected to a funeral ritual. Keda, Georgia
Keda ( ka, ქედა ) is an urban-type settlement ( ''daba'') in the Autonomous Republic of Adjara, in southwestern Georgia, located east of the regional capital Batumi. The town of 1,285 residents (2021) is the administrative centre of the Keda Municipality, and is located at the confluence of the Acharistsqali (literally "river of Adjara") and Akavreta rivers, at an elevation of above sea level. The town has administrative, educational and health facilities, small businesses, and a museum of local history. Keda was a trading post in the 19th century. It was given the status of ''daba'' in 1966. Population At the beginning of 2021, Keda had a population of 1,285, a decrease of 15% since the 2014 census. Khelvachauri
Khelvachauri ( ka, ხელვაჩაური ) is a village in the Autonomous Republic of Adjara in the southwest of Georgia, southeast of the regional capital Batumi and situated on the right bank of the Chorokhi River. Between 1968 and 2011 it was a ''daba'' ( urban-type settlement), but due to municipal border changes by far most of the town was absorbed into the city municipality of Batumi and Khelvachauri was downgraded to a village. The territorial transfer also included the locations of the administrative centers of the Municipality of Khelvachauri. This means that Khelvachauri municipality is governed since 2011 from the territory of another municipality, Batumi. The remaining part of Khelvachauri that was left within the Khelvachauri Municipality falls administratively under the Sharabidze community (თემი, temi) of the municipality. Kobuleti
Kobuleti ( ka, ქობულეთი ) is a town in Adjara, western Georgia, situated on the eastern coast of the Black Sea. It is the seat of Kobuleti Municipality and a seaside resort, visited annually by Georgians and many former Soviet Union residents. It is especially popular with Armenian tourists. The New Rights Party (NRP) ( ka, ახალი მემარჯვენეები, ''Akhali Memarjveneebi''), also translated as New Conservative Party (NCP), was a political party in Georgia. It was an associate member of the International Democrat Union and applicant of the European People's Party.
