Aden Lava Flow Wilderness is one of many Wildernesses operated by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in New Mexico. It is in size. The John D. Dingell, Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act, signed March 12, 2019, designates the Wilderness as a component of the National Wilderness Preservation System, protecting approximately 27,673 acres. Prior to its 2019 designation, it was known as the Aden Lava Flow Wilderness Study Area. It lies within the Potrillo volcanic field southwest of Las Cruces, and is south of County Road B002. Doña Ana County is located in the southern part of the State of New Mexico, United States. As of the 2020 U.S. Census, its population was 219,561, which makes it the second-most populated county in New Mexico. Its county seat is Las Cruces, the second-most populous municipality in New Mexico after Albuquerque, with 111,385 as of the 2020 U.S. Census. The county is named for Doña Ana Robledo, who died there in 1680 while fleeing the Pueblo Revolt. The Potrillo volcanic field is a monogenetic volcanic field located on the Rio Grande Rift in southern New Mexico, United States and northern Chihuahua, Mexico. Aden Crater
Aden Crater is a small shield volcano located in Doña Ana County, about southwest of Las Cruces, New Mexico. It is located in the northwest part of the Aden-Afton basalt field, which is part of the central area of the Potrillo volcanic field. A fossilized ground sloth, now at the Peabody Museum, was found in a fumarole roughly 100' deep located on the SE portion of the crater rim. Several ground sloth coprolites were also recovered and were stored in the Geology department at UTEP. No volcanic activity at Aden Crater is known from historic times. The most recent known activity has been dated to roughly 16,000 years ago. The flows associated with the crater can be divided into two groups.
