Adelaide Tosi
Adelaide Tosi ( – 27 March 1859) was an Italian operatic soprano. Born in Milan, Tosi studied singing with Girolamo Crescentini. She made her professional debut in her native city on 26 December 1820, singing Ippolito in Simon Mayr's '' Fedra''.Ashbrook (1982), p. 612, note 149. On 12 March 1822 she portrayed Azema in the premiere of Giacomo Meyerbeer's ''L'esule di Granata'' at La Scala. Her debut in Naples was on 29 September 1824 at the Teatro di San Carlo in the premiere of Giovanni Pacini's ''Alessandro nelle Indie''. On 7 April 1828, she portrayed Bianca in Vincenzo Bellini's ''Bianca e Fernando'' for the grand opening of the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa. She returned to that house later that season to sing Pamira in Gioachino Rossini's ''Le siège de Corinthe''. ''Le siège de Corinthe'' (English: ''The Siege of Corinth'') is an opera in three acts by Gioachino Rossini set to a French libretto by Luigi Balocchi and Alexandre Soumet, which was based on the reworking of some of the music from the composer's 1820 opera for Naples, ''Maometto II'', the libretto of which was written by Cesare della Valle. ''La Belle Assemblée'' (in full ''La Belle Assemblée or, Bell's Court and Fashionable Magazine Addressed Particularly to the Ladies'') was a British women's magazine published from 1806 to 1837, founded by John Bell (1745–1831). Publishing history The magazine was published as ''La Belle Assemblée'' from 1806 until May 1832. It became ''The Court Magazine and Belle Assemblée'' from 1832 to 1837. After 1837 the ''Belle Assemblée'' name was dropped when the magazine merged with the ''Lady's Magazine and Museum'' (itself a merger of '' The Lady's Magazine'' and a competitor) to become ''The Court Magazine and Monthly Critic''. William Ashbrook
William Ashbrook (January 28, 1922 – March 31, 2009) was an American musicologist, writer, journalist, and academic. He was perhaps best noted as a historian, researcher and popularizer of the works of Italian opera composer Gaetano Donizetti. Biography Ashbrook was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Elizabeth Forbes (3 August 1924 – 22 October 2014) was an English author, music critic, and musicologist who specialised in writing about opera. Her main areas of interest were 19th- and 20th-century opera (French and Scandinavian in particular) and singers, both historical and present-day. Andrea Leone Tottola wrote the Italian libretto after Victor Hugo's play ' (1828) and Eugène Scribe's play ''Leicester'', both of which following from Sir Walter Scott's novel ''Kenilworth'' (1821). Daniel Auber composed another opera on the same subject, ''Leicester, ou Le chateau de Kenilworth'' in 1823.
