Addy Valero
Addy Coromoto Valero Velandria (died 22 January 2020) was a Venezuelan politician who served as a deputy in the National Assembly. Career Valero served as an Acción Democrática deputy for the state of Mérida between 1986 and her death in 2020. She was notable for continuing to serve in her role through a cancer diagnosis and for publicly rejecting offers of bribes from the Nicolás Maduro government to support Luis Parra's claims to the National Assembly's presidency in return for medical treatment. Acting President Juan Guaidó later reported that Valero had also been ambushed in her home by Maduro's forces the day before the 2020 National Assembly election, being both threatened and offered money and treatment for her vote to go to Parra; she replied "I can die but Venezuela isn't going to die for my vote". National Assembly (Venezuela)
The National Assembly ( es, Asamblea Nacional) is the legislature for Venezuela that was first elected in 2000. It is a unicameral body made up of a variable number of members, who were elected by a "universal, direct, personal, and secret" vote partly by direct election in state-based voting districts, and partly on a state-based party-list proportional representation system. The number of seats is constant, each state and the Capital district elected three representatives plus the result of dividing the state population by 1.1% of the total population of the country. Three seats are reserved for representatives of Venezuela's indigenous peoples and elected separately by all citizens, not just those with indigenous backgrounds. Acción Democrática
Democratic Action ( es, Acción Democrática, AD) is a Venezuelan social democratic and centre-left political party established in 1941. The party played an important role in the early years of Venezuelan democracy, leading the government during Venezuela's first democratic period (1945–1948). A decade of dictatorship under Marcos Pérez Jiménez followed, which saw AD excluded from power. With the advent of democracy in 1958, four Presidents of Venezuela came from Acción Democrática from the 1950s to the 1990s during the two-party period with COPEI. Nicolás Maduro Moros (; born 23 November 1962) is a Venezuelan politician and president of Venezuela since 2013, with his presidency under dispute since 2019. Beginning his working life as a bus driver, Maduro rose to become a trade union leader before being elected to the National Assembly in 2000. Luis Parra
Luis Eduardo Parra Rivero (born 7 July 1978) is a Venezuelan politician who was in a dispute with Juan Guaidó for a year over who was the President of the National Assembly of Venezuela based on a vote on 5 January 2020. The investigative journalism website Armando.info reported in 2019 that Parra was among nine lawmakers that mediated in favor of two businessmen linked with the government, and was accused of being involved in corruption with the Local Committees for Supply and Production (CLAP) program of the Nicolás Maduro government. Parra denied the accusations. After the investigation was published, Parra was expelled from his party Justice First, along with other deputies. 2020 Venezuelan National Assembly Delegated Committee Election
The 2020 Venezuelan National Assembly Delegated Committee election was to be held in the ordinary session of the National Assembly on 5 January, in which 160 deputies were to elect the legislature's board of directors for the year 2020–21: the president, the first and second vice presidents, the secretary and the deputy secretary. It was the last such election of the IV National Assembly. The election was disrupted by the security forces physically preventing some opposition members, including Juan Guaidó, as well as members of the media, from entering the National Assembly building in Caracas. Operación Alacrán (English: ''Operation Scorpion''), also known as CLAP affair or PSUV-CLAP faction, is the name given to a corruption plot which was denounced in 2019 by the members of the National Assembly of Venezuela. It would have sought to avoid the re-election of Juan Guaidó on 5 January 2020 as President of the Assembly, by obtaining the support of opposing legislators in exchange for millions of dollars.
