Adam Rzhevusky
Aleksander Adam Rzewuski (russian: Адам Адамович Ржевуский, tr. ; 1801 – April 17, 1888) was a Polish-Russian general. He was born in Pohrebyshche in the Kiev Governorate of the Russian Empire (present-day Ukraine). He participated in wars in Poland and the Crimea. He died in Kiev. Pohrebyshche () is a small city in Vinnytsia Oblast, Ukraine. It is the administrative center of Pohrebyshche Raion (district) in western Ukraine. Pohrebyshche is situated near the sources of the Ros River. Population: Names Pohrebyshche is also known as , or or , . History The town is very old and origin of its name is not clear. ''Pohreb'' means ''a big cellar'' in Ukrainian. On the other hand, ''Pohrebaty'' can be interpreted as ''to perform a burial''. According to Imperial Russian ethnographer Lavrentii Pokhylevych in his work "Tales of inhabited areas of the Kyiv province" in 1884, before the Mongol invasion of Rus, during the times of Kyiv the town was called Rokitnya. The Imperial Order of the White Eagle (russian: О́рден Бе́лого Орла́) was an Imperial Russian Order based on the Polish honor. Emperor Nicholas I of Russia established the award in 1831 as the ''Imperial and Royal Order of the White Eagle''. A recipient of the Order was granted the title ''Knight of the Imperial (and Royal) Order of the White Eagle''. Background The "white eagle" has been associated with Poland even prior to statehood; first appearing on the Polish Coat of Arms in the 13th century. The original Order of the White Eagle ( pl, Order Orła Białego) was reputedly established by King Władysław I in 1325.
