Ada Polak
Ada Buch Polak (19 September 1914 – 25 October 2010) was a Norwegian art historian. Biography Andrea Buch was born in Ljan, Norway. Her father was the engineer Harald Buch (1872–1950) and her mother was the teacher Camilla Collett (1878–1973). She was a great-granddaughter of writer Camilla Collett (1813–1895) and professor Peter Jonas Collett (1813-1851), grandniece of museum curator Robert (1842-1913) and historian Alf Collett (1844–1919). Her sister Ellisiv (1908–2001) married historian and professor Sverre Steen (1898–1983). She finished her secondary education in 1933 and graduated from the University of Oslo in 1940 with the thesis ''Norsk Glass 1739–1753'', and continued working with glass to take her doctorate in 1953 on the thesis ''Gammelt norsk glass''. Ljan
Ljan () is a residential neighborhood in the borough Nordstrand in Oslo, Norway. It is located in the eastern rolling hillsides of the fjord Bunnefjorden. To the south Ljanselva which begins at Lutvann has its mouth, and where it runs through Liadalen at Ljan it also constitutes the border with borough Søndre Nordstrand. The number of inhabitants was about 3,500 in 2004. Ljan Church is known as one of the very few churches in Norway that was built in the 1930s in the Romanesque Revival style. The public beaches at Ljan are Hvervenbukta, Ljansbadet and Katten, and in addition there are a number of private bath houses along Mosseveien. Its purpose is to support the advancement of science and scholarship in Norway. History The Royal Frederick University in Christiania was established in 1811. The idea of a learned society in Christiania surfaced for the first time in 1841. The city of Trondhjem had no university, but had a learned society, the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters, established in 1760. The purpose of a learned society in Christiania was to support scientific studies and aid publication of academic papers. The idea of the Humboldt-inspired university, where independent research stood strong, had taken over for the instrumental view of a university as a means to produce civil servants.
