''Acraea insularis'' is a butterfly in the family Nymphalidae. It is found on the island of São Tomé. The species was first named in 1893 by Emily Mary Bowdler Sharpe. Description ''A. insularis'' E. Sharpe. Forewing above black-brown with a yellow transverse spot in the middle of the cell and a similar orange-yellow spot at its apex, an orange-yellow spot in the basal part of 2, a free, crescentic, small spot in 1 b near the distal margin and three small orange-yellow subapical spots in 4-6, of which the one in 4 is placed nearer to the distal margin and quite free. The hind wing above at the base blackish as far as vein 2, then with a broad median band about 5 mm. in breadth, at the inner margin and towards the base light yellow, distally orange-yellow, projecting almost rectangularly distad in cellule 4 (almost as in '' johnstoni'') and adorned with black discal dots; the hindwing beneath light yellowish to the base with free black dots and beyond the middle with a broad b ...

Emily Mary Bowdler Sharpe
Emily Mary Bowdler Sharpe, born on 11 December 1868, was an English entomologist, colourist and illustrator Emily Mary Bowdler Sharpe was the eldest of ten daughters of Richard Bowdler Sharpe (1847–1909) and Emily Eliza Sharpe (née Burrows; 1842–1928). She had 11 sisters and one brother who died in infancy. She learned her craft from her father and initially she worked as a colourist on her father's books before dedicating herself to the study of butterflies. She worked throughout her life on butterflies, and described many new species. The Nymphalidae are the largest family of butterflies, with more than 6,000 species distributed throughout most of the world. ''Acraea'' is a genus of brush-footed butterflies (family Nymphalidae) of the subfamily Heliconiinae. It seems to be highly paraphyletic and has long been used as a "wastebin taxon" to unite about 220 species of anatomically conservative Acraeini. The Consortium for the Barcode of Life (CBOL) was an international initiative dedicated to supporting the development of DNA barcoding as a global standard for species identification.
