Acme Motorcycle (1939–1949)
The Acme motorcycle was assembled and marketed by Bennett & Wood of Wentworth Avenue, Sydney, who also built Speedwell bicycles and were also BSA importers for New South Wales. The engine was a Villiers 122cc Mark 9D, and the frame was built locally. The bike was aimed at city commuters as a cheap and economical mode of transport. Production began in May 1939, and was phased out in 1949, due to the success of the imported BSA Bantam. Speedwell Bicycles
Speedwell was a brand of bicycle manufactured by Bennett & Wood, a firm established by Charles W. Bennett and Charles R. Wood in 1882 in Sydney. As motorcars and motorcycles became available Bennett and Wood entered the motor trade. They built and sold the Speedwell bicycle and the Speedwell and Acme motorcycles. The Speedwell motorcycle was built in the early 1900s. History Bennett and Wood were accomplished penny-farthing enthusiasts and racers. They were heavily involved in bicycle racing in the Sydney area prior to opening a bicycle shop; Bennett was the intercolonial and NSW champion (1883, 1885). Bennett was a member of a Speedwell bicycle club in England prior to arrival in Australia and for a time raced as a member of that club. BSA (motorcycle)
BSA Company Limited is a motorcycle manufacturer which purchased rights to the BSA name from Birmingham Small Arms Company's successor, Dennis Poore's Manganese Bronze Holdings, upon the liquidation of Norton Villiers Triumph in 1978. In October 2016, India's Mahindra Group purchased BSA for £3.4 million in an effort to reintroduce motorcycles bearing the famous BSA name. Origin When NVT Motorcycles Limited was liquidated in 1978, its management, then under William Colquhoun, formed a new company (BSA Company) and bought from NVT the rights to the BSA motorcycle brand. Villiers Ltd
Villiers Engineering was a manufacturer of motorcycles and cycle parts, and an engineering company based in Villiers Street, Wolverhampton, England. Early history In the 1890s John Marston's Sunbeam had become extremely successful by relying on high quality of production and finish. But Marston was dissatisfied with the pedals on his machines, which he bought in. In 1890 he dispatched his son Charles to the US on a selling trip, but included in his instructions that Charles must discuss pedal engineering with Pratt and Whitney in Hartford, Connecticut and come back with a high-class pedal and the machinery for making it. Charles said that the Villiers Engineering Co. was "the ultimate fruit" of his trip to the US, being impressed by the production system and the labour saving devices. BSA Bantam
The BSA Bantam is a two-stroke unit construction motorcycle that was produced by the Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA) from 1948 (as a 125 cc) until 1971 (as a 175 cc). Exact production figures are unknown, but it was over 250,000 and some estimates place the number closer to half a million. History Despite the Bantam being considered the archetypal 'truly British' lightweight motorcycle outselling all others, it was based on a German design. The Bantam was based on the DKW RT 125, a design that was received as war reparations, with the Bantam as a mirror image so the gearchange was on the right side as with other British motorcycles of the period. Waratah Motorcycles
Waratah motorcycles were manufactured in Sydney, Australia, from before 1911 to around 1948, although Waratah badged motorcycles were sold into the 1950s. Initially Waratah motorcycles were manufactured by the Canada Cycle & Motor Agency, Ltd.Queanbeyan Age (NSW: 1907–1915), Friday 3 November 1911, page 4. Not only was a Waratah machine equipped with 4.5 hp Fafnir engine available in 1911 but the articles states that "'The Waratah' is too well known among motor cyclists to need any labored praise here".
