Taxonomy Acidocerinae has been considered a subfamily since Short and Fikáček restructured the classification of the Hydrophilidae in 2013. Hydrophilidae
Hydrophilidae, also known colloquially as water scavenger beetles, is a family of beetles. Aquatic hydrophilids are notable for their long maxillary palps, which are longer than their antennae. Several of the former subfamilies of Hydrophilidae have recently been removed and elevated to family rank; Epimetopidae, Georissidae (= Georyssinae), Helophoridae, Hydrochidae, and Spercheidae (= Sphaeridiinae). While the majority of hydrophilids are aquatic, around a third of described species are terrestrial, mostly belonging to the subfamily Sphaeridiinae. With rare exceptions, the larvae are predatory while the adults may be herbivores or predators in addition to scavenging. Many species are able to produce sounds. Species of '' Hydrophilus'' are reported as pests in fish hatcheries. Other species are voracious consumers of mosquito larvae, and have potential as biological control agents. This beetle family contains 2,835 species in 169 genera. Geography Hydrophilid beetles ...

Tobochares
''Tobochares'' is a Neotropical genus of water scavenger beetles in the family Hydrophilidae represented by 24 described species known from the Guiana Shield Region. Taxonomy The genus ''Tobochares'' belongs in the subfamily Acidocerinae. It was first described by Short and García in 2007. Since then, as more species are discovered in the seepages of the Guiana Shield Region, there have been two additional papers describing several additional species. Description Small beetles (1.5–2.6 mm), yellowish brown, orange brown to dark brown in coloration; eyes entire to emarginate; maxillary palps from short and slender to very short and stout. The elytral punctation and sculpture is highly variable in this genus. There is also variation in the shape of the male genitalia and wing development. A complete diagnosis was presented by Girón and Short. Habitat Most ''Tobochares'' are considered seepage specialists. One species (''Tobochares fusus'') has been also colle ...

Sindolus
''Sindolus'' is a Neotropical genus of water scavenger beetles in the family Hydrophilidae represented by eight described species, ranging from Mexico to Argentina, and including one species recorded from Antigua in the Lesser Antilles. Taxonomy The genus ''Sindolus'' belongs in the subfamily Acidocerinae. It was first described by David Sharp in 1882 to accommodate two Central American species. Since 1919 ''Sindolus'' was considered a subgenus of the genus '' Helochares'' by d’Orchymont and stayed in that category until a molecular-based phylogenetic analysis supported its restitution at the category of genus. Description Small to sized beetles (2.5–5.0 mm), smooth and shiny dorsally, moderately to strongly convex in lateral view; yellowish, orange-brown, to brown in coloration, with long maxillary palps. The most distinctive characteristic of ''Sindolus'' is the presence of a sharp and strongly elevated (laminar) longitudinal carina on the mesoventrite. ...

Peltochares
''Peltochares'' is a genus of water scavenger beetles in the family Hydrophilidae represented by eight described species. It is distributed across the Afrotropical, Australasian, Indo-Malayan, and Palaearctic realms. Taxonomy The genus ''Peltochares'' was described for the first time by Maurice Auguste Régimbart Maurice Auguste Régimbart (1852 in Evreux – 22 September 1907 in Evreux) was a French entomologist who specialised in Coleoptera, particularly Dytiscidae, Gyrinidae and Hydrophilidae. Regimbart worked on expedition material collected mainly from ... in 1907 for a single, large, and morphologically unusual species from Gabon (''Peltochares conspicuus''). Thanks to the result of a molecular-based phylogenetic analysis, along with dissections of the male genitalia, several species formerly placed in the genus '' Helochares'' were confirmed to belong in the same genus as that large and morphologically unusual species.
