Achinos, Serres
Achinos ( el, Αχινός) is a village and a former municipality in the Serres regional unit, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Visaltia, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 155.432 km2. Population 2,427 (2011). The seat of the municipality was in Sitochori. Other communities in the municipal unit are Dafni, Zervochori, Lefkotopos, Patrikio and Choumniko. Central Macedonia
Central Macedonia ( el, Κεντρική Μακεδονία, Kentrikí Makedonía, ) is one of the thirteen administrative regions of Greece, consisting of the central part of the geographical and historical region of Macedonia. Serres ( el, Περιφερειακή ενότητα Σερρών) is one of the regional units of Greece, in the geographic region of Macedonia. It is part of the Region of Central Macedonia. Its capital is the city of Serres. The total population reaches just over 175,000. Geography The mountains are Orvelos to the north, Menoikio to the east, Pangaio to the southeast, Kerdylio to the southwest, Vertiskos to the west, parts of Krousi to the west and portions of the Kerkini lies to the northwest. Lefkotopos
Lefkotopos ( el, Λευκότοπος) is a village in the municipal unit of Achinos, Serres regional unit, Central Macedonia, Greece. It has 311 inhabitants (2011). In Lefkotopos is situated the KEP ( Citizens Service Center, ΚΕΠ) of the municipal unit of Achinos. The village was founded in 1922, by Pontic Greeks, also by Greek inhabitants of North-East Anatolia ("Pontus"), an area whose population has been Greek since the early Greek history, and who were expelled from their homes in 1922, by the Turks. The inhabitants of the village are mostly farmers who grow tobacco, olives, vegetables, fig tree fruits, organic products (almonds, nuts) and herbs. The club of the former inhabitants of the village, who now live in Thessaloniki, organize on 28 August of every year (this is the day before the holy day of Saint Ioannis Prodromos, to whom the newly built village church is devoted).
