Achill GFC is a Gaelic football club which represents Achill Island and the Currane The Corraun Peninsula, also spelt Currane (Irish:''An Corrán'' ), is a peninsula in County Mayo, on the west coast of Ireland. It extends out from the mainland towards Achill Island. Thoroughfares on the peninsula include the Great Western Gr ... Peninsula. The club was founded in 1941. Although the area was not new to Gaelic games, there never existed a club as such to bring together the footballers of the numerous villages to play as one team and represent the parish itself. The Junior footballers contested their first ever West Mayo Championship in 1942 and not only did they win that, they also proceeded to capture the County title. They have recently announced that they will have won a Junior County title by 2024. Gaelic Football
Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. A goal is awarded for kicking the ball under the crossbar into the net (the ball cannot be hand-passed into the goal), signalled by the umpire raising a green flag. Achill Island
Achill Island (; ga, Acaill, Oileán Acla) in County Mayo is the largest of the Irish isles, and is situated off the west coast of Republic of Ireland, Ireland. It has a population of 2,594. Its area is . Achill is attached to the mainland by Michael Davitt Bridge, between the villages of Gob an Choire (Achill Sound) and Poll Raithnà (Polranny). A bridge was first completed here in 1887. Other centres of population include the villages of Keel, County Mayo, Keel, Dooagh, Dumha Éige (Dooega), Dún Ibhir (Dooniver), and Dugort. Currane
The Corraun Peninsula, also spelt Currane (Irish:''An Corrán'' ), is a peninsula in County Mayo, on the west coast of Ireland. It extends out from the mainland towards Achill Island. Thoroughfares on the peninsula include the Great Western Greenway, which passes through the north side of the peninsula, following a scenic route. As of 2016 the population of the Corraun peninsula was 726. The entire peninsula is in the Gaeltacht (designated Irish speaking region) with 12% of the population claiming to speak Irish on a daily basis outside the education system. The peninsula is immediately east of Achill Island, and forms part of the parish of Achill. It comprises the villages of Tornragee, Polranny, Belfarsad, Corraun (Currane) and Dogh Beg. Mayo Junior Football Championship
The Mayo Junior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition contested by lower-tier Mayo GAA clubs. Islandeady are the title holders (2022) defeating Cill Chomáin in the Final. Honours The trophy presented to the winners is the McDonnell Cup. The winners of the Mayo Junior Championship qualify to represent their county in the Connacht Junior Club Football Championship. They often do well there, with the likes of Kilmeena (January 2022, following 2021 Mayo JFC win), Kilmaine (2019), Louisburgh (2016) and Ardnaree Sarsfields (2015) among the clubs from Mayo to win at least one Connacht Championship after winning the Mayo Junior Football Championship. Former Mayo manager John Maughan was in charge of Lahardane when they won the 2017 Mayo JFC for the first time and then followed it up with a Connacht title, also in 2017.
