Achavath Achim Synagogue
Congregation Ahavath Achim (transliterated from Hebrew as "Brotherly Love") is a Modern Orthodox Jewish congregation and synagogue, located in Fairfield, Connecticut, in the United States. Established as a congregation in 1904, the congregation's first synagogue building, located at 725 Hancock Avenue in Bridgeport, was completed in 1926, vacated in the 1960s, and was subsequently used a Christian church. This former synagogue was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 11, 1995, as "West End Congregation--Achavath icAchim Synagogue", as part of a multiple property listing of fifteen historic synagogues in Connecticut. A bema was an elevated platform used as an orator's podium in ancient Athens. The term can refer to the raised area in a sanctuary. The history of Bridgeport, Connecticut was, in the late 17th and most of the 18th century, one of land acquisitions from the native inhabitants, farming and fishing. From the mid-18th century to the mid-19th century, Bridgeport's history was one of shipbuilding, whaling and rapid growth.
