Ace Reid
Asa Elmer "Ace" Reid, Jr., (March 10, 1925 – November 10, 1991) was the creator of the cartoon ''Cowpokes'' and a Western humorist. ''Cowpokes'', at one time, ran in over 400 weekly newspapers across the United States. He produced many popular cartoon books and calendars during his lifetime. He was born on March 10, 1925, at Lelia Lake, Texas (near Amarillo). He was the son of Asa E. Reid, Sr., and Callie Miles Bishop. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Electra, Texas, where he grew up ranching and cowboying. During World War II, he served as a machinist's mate in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific aboard the USS Lanier (APA-125), USS'' Lanier ''. ''Cowpokes'' was born on board the ''Lanier''; "The Sorry Salt" was a cartoon he drew for the ship's newspaper. After the war, "The Sorry Salt" became "Jake", his primary character. Lelia Lake is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in central Donley County, Texas, United States. It lies along U.S. Route 287 in Texas, U.S. Route 287, southeast of the city of Clarendon, Texas, Clarendon, the county seat of Donley County. Richard Samet "Kinky" Friedman (born November 1, 1944) is an American singer, songwriter, novelist, humorist, politician, and former columnist for ''Texas Monthly'' who styles himself in the mold of popular American satirists Will Rogers and Mark Twain. Friedman was one of two independent candidates in the 2006 election for the office of Governor of Texas. Receiving 12.6% of the vote, Friedman placed fourth in the six-person race. Patrick Bruce "Pat" Oliphant (born 24 July 1935) is an Australian-born American artist whose career spanned more than sixty years. His body of work as a whole focuses mostly on American and global politics, culture, and corruption; he is particularly known for his caricatures of American presidents and other powerful leaders. Over the course of his long career, Oliphant produced thousands of daily editorial cartoons, dozens of bronze sculptures, as well as a large oeuvre of drawings and paintings. He retired in 2015. (born John Richbourg, August 20, 1910 - February 15, 1986) was an American radio disc jockey who attained fame in the 1950s and 1960s for playing rhythm and blues music on Nashville radio station WLAC. He was also a notable record producer and artist manager. Richbourg was arguably the most popular and charismatic of the four announcers at WLAC who showcased popular African-American music in nightly programs from the late 1940s to the early 1970s.
