The accumulation function ''a''(''t'') is a function defined in terms of time ''t'' expressing the ratio of the value at time ''t'' (future value) and the initial investment (present value). It is used in interest theory. Thus ''a''(0)=1 and the value at time ''t'' is given by: :A(t) = A(0) \cdot a(t). where the initial investment is A(0). In economics and finance, present value (PV), also known as present discounted value, is the value of an expected income stream determined as of the date of valuation. The present value is usually less than the future value because money has interest-earning potential, a characteristic referred to as the time value of money, except during times of zero- or negative interest rates, when the present value will be equal or more than the future value. Time value can be described with the simplified phrase, "A dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow". Here, 'worth more' means that its value is greater than tomorrow. Annual Effective Discount Rate
The annual effective discount rate expresses the amount of interest paid or earned as a ''percentage'' of the balance at the ''end'' of the annual period. It is related to but slightly smaller than the effective rate of interest, which expresses the amount of interest as a ''percentage'' of the balance at the ''start'' of the period. The discount rate is commonly used for U.S. Treasury bills and similar financial instruments. For example, consider a government bond that sells for $95 ('balance' in the bond at the start of period) and pays $100 ('balance' in the bond at the end of period) in a year's time.
