Acanthurinae
''Acanthurinae'' is a subfamily of fish belonging to the family Acanthuridae, including 55 species in four genera. Description Among the species of the genera ''Acanthurus'' and ''Zebrasoma'' there are small anatomical differences: the first are disc-shaped and have a crescent-shaped tail, while the ''Zebrasoma'' species have ovaloid profile and a protruding muzzle. The fry is transparent and has 13 venomous spines on the spine. The appearance changes when the specimen reaches the size of about 10 cm. Like all species of the family Acanthuridae, Acanthurinae have a retractable spine on the caudal peduncle. It is very sharp (as a lancet) and it is used as an extreme defense. To emphasize the importance of this spine many species have showy aposematic colors in the caudal peduncle (or even directly a colored lancet). ''Acanthurus'' is a genus of fish in the family Acanthuridae found in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Ocean. They are found in tropical oceans, especially near coral reefs, with most species in the Indo-Pacific but a few are found in the Atlantic Ocean. As other members of the family, they have a pair of spines, one on either side of the base of the tail which are dangerously sharp. ''Acanthurus mata'' is a marine tropical fish belonging to the family of the Acanthuridae or surgeonfishes. Its common names are elongate surgeonfish and blue-lined surgeonfish. Description It is a medium sized fish that can reach a maximum size of length. The body has an oval shape and is compressed laterally. Like other surgeonfishes, ''Acanthurus mata'' swims with its pectoral fins. The caudal fin has a crescent shape. The mouth is small and pointed. ''Acanthurus guttatus'' (whitespotted surgeonfish) is a marine reef tang in the fish family Acanthuridae. It is found in shallow waters on reefs in the Indo-Pacific. Description The whitespotted surgeonfish is deep-bodied and laterally compressed. The basic colour is grey which darkens towards the posterior and the body is liberally spotted with white. There is a band of white just behind the eye stretching from the operculum to the nape of the neck. Another white band encircles the fish just behind the yellow pelvic fins.
