Abraham Van Der Haagen
Abraham van der Haagen (1587 - 1639) was a Dutch Golden Age painter and engraver, of whose work nothing remains. He was born in Dordrecht the son of Joris van der Hagen (also named Pauw), who had fled Antwerp before 1575, and Adriaenken Martens. He was baptized in Dordrecht on 26 April 1587, where he joined the St. Lucas Guild in 1608.Abraham van der Haagen in the RKD He married Sophia Ottendr. van der Laen on 18 December 1611. Dutch Golden Age
The Dutch Golden Age ( nl, Gouden Eeuw ) was a period in the history of the Netherlands, roughly spanning the era from 1588 (the birth of the Dutch Republic) to 1672 (the Rampjaar, "Disaster Year"), in which Dutch trade, science, and Dutch art, art and the Dutch military were among the most acclaimed in Europe. The first section is characterized by the Eighty Years' War, which ended in 1648. The Golden Age continued in peacetime during the Dutch Republic until the end of the century, when costly conflicts, including the Franco-Dutch War and War of the Spanish Succession fuelled economic decline. The transition by the Netherlands to becoming the foremost maritime and economic power in the world has been called the "Dutch Miracle" by historian K. W. Swart. Nieuw Nederlandsch Biografisch Woordenboek
The ''Nieuw Nederlandsch Biografisch Woordenboek'' (''NNBW'') is a biographical reference work in the Dutch language. It has been succeeded by the ''Biografisch Woordenboek van Nederland''. It was published in ten parts between 1911 and 1937 by Sijthoff, Leiden, and the editors were and P. J. Blok. The lexicon contains more than 22,000 short biographies on important or at least notable Dutch people. No persons born after 1910 were included. The ''NNBW'' was compiled by several hundred historians and other experts. Since then it has been considered one of the most important reference works for Dutch history. It has been digitalised through a collaboration between the Digital Library for Dutch Literature (dbnl) and the Institution for Dutch History (ING), and both organisations have made the ''NNBW'' fully available to everyone on their respective sites. ''Surroundings of Arnhem'' Fine Arts of Carcassonne Joris Abrahamsz. van der Haagen (c. 1615 – The Hague, 23 May 1669 (buried)) was a Dutch Golden Age painter specialized in landscapes. Biography It is unclear where Joris van der Haagen was born, either in Arnhem or Dordrecht, but archival evidence shows that he started his drawing career in Arnhem. He probably learned to paint from his father, the painter Abraham van der Haagen. When his father died he moved in 1639 to the Hague, where he joined the Guild of St. Luke in 1643. A year later he became honorary citizen of The Hague. In 1656 he was one of the founding members of the Confrerie Pictura, which was located on the Princessegracht in the Hague. The painting he made of the Princessegracht at this time probably shows the original building, which has since been renovated beyond recognition. Dutch Golden Age painting is the painting of the Dutch Golden Age, a period in Dutch history roughly spanning the 17th century, during and after the later part of the Eighty Years' War (1568–1648) for Dutch independence. The new Dutch Republic was the most prosperous nation in Europe and led European trade, science, and art. The northern Netherlandish provinces that made up the new state had traditionally been less important artistic centres than cities in Flanders in the south. The upheavals and large-scale transfers of population of the war, and the sharp break with the old monarchist and Catholic cultural traditions, meant that Dutch art had to reinvent itself almost entirely, a task in which it was very largely successful.
