Abraham Fleetwood Luya
Abraham Fleetwood Luya (1837 – 6 July 1899) was a businessman and politician in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. He was a mayor of South Brisbane and a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early years Luya was born in Liverpool, England, to parents Abraham Luya and his wife Maria (née Fleetwood). Educated at Liverpool, he worked as a shipping clerk in England before finding work as a midshipman on the Anglia eastern trade. He arrived in New South Wales in 1855 before moving to Queensland in 1864 and worked at several jobs before opening Cootharaba Sawmills in 1869 at Gympie. In 1871, Luya helped established ''McGhie, Luya & Company'', a merchant and sawmilling business (now the heritage-listed Mill Point Settlement archeological site). Electoral District Of Brisbane South
South Brisbane, also known as Brisbane South, is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland. The electorate encompasses suburbs in Brisbane's inner-south, stretching from East Brisbane to West End, and south to Annerley. Parts of Greenslopes and Coorparoo are also located in the electorate. South Brisbane is Queensland's oldest electorate, being the only one of the original 16 districts to have been contested at every election. It has generally been considered a safe seat for the Labor Party since 1915, but has in recent election cycles shifted in favour of the Greens. Mill Point Settlement Site
Mill Point Settlement Site is a heritage-listed former settlement at Elanda Point at Lake Cootharaba in Como, Shire of Noosa, Queensland, Australia. It was built from to the 1940s. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 6 April 2005. History The Mill Point Settlement Site on Lake Cootharaba contains remnants of a private "company" township based around a sawmill and sustained by timber extraction from local forests which was in operation from the late 1860s until the early 1890s. Exploration of the timber resources in the Cooloola area commenced in the early 1860s. William Pettigrew visited the area in 1863, exploring the Noosa River and its lakes. Although Pettigrew subsequently concentrated his timber operations in northern Cooloola, he recorded quantities of hardwoods including cedar, Bunya pine, Kauri pine, Hoop pine, Cypress pine, beech, ash, tulip and yellow-wood in various locations. The Queensland Government is the democratic administrative authority of the Australian state of Queensland. The Government of Queensland, a parliamentary constitutional monarchy was formed in 1859 as prescribed in its Constitution, as amended from time to time. South Brisbane Municipal Council
The City of South Brisbane was a local government area on the southern side of the Brisbane River, Queensland, Australia. It was established in 1888 and existed until 1925 when it was amalgamated into the City of Brisbane. History When the Town of Brisbane was first established, it was predominantly on the northern bank of the Brisbane River, but included some areas south of the river, including the ward of Kangaroo Point and the ward of South Brisbane, the area between Vulture Street and the river. The Queensland Government passed the Divisional Boards Act of 1879 to establish a system of Divisional Boards for the purpose of providing local government for portions of the colony outside the boundaries of municipalities. Thomas McIlwraith
Sir Thomas McIlwraith (17 May 1835 – 17 July 1900) was for many years the dominant figure of colonial politics in Queensland. He was Premier of Queensland from 1879 to 1883, again in 1888, and for a third time in 1893. In common with most politicians of his era, McIlwraith was an influential businessman, who combined his parliamentary career with a prosperous involvement in the pastoral industry. The premier of Queensland is the head of government in the Australian state of Queensland. By convention the premier is the leader of the party with a parliamentary majority in the unicameral Legislative Assembly of Queensland. The premier is appointed by the Governor of Queensland.
