Aboriginal Affairs NSW (AANSW) is an agency of the Department of Premier and Cabinet in the Government of New South Wales. Aboriginal Affairs NSW is responsible for administering legislation in relation to the NSW Government policies that support Indigenous Australians in New South Wales, and for advising the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Ben Franklin. History Early administrative period The first body of the NSW Government specifically dealing with Aboriginal affairs was the Board for the Protection of Aborigines (BPA; also known as the Aboriginal Protection Board), which followed practice of "protection" taken by the Australian colonies when it was established by an Executive Council minute of 2 June 1883. Ben Franklin (Australian Politician)
Benjamin Cameron Franklin (born 1972/1973) is an Australian politician. He served as a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from March 2015 until March 2019, representing the National Party. He resigned in 2019 to contest the Legislative Assembly seat of Ballina, but was defeated by the incumbent Greens MP Tamara Smith. He was subsequently appointed in May 2019 to fill the casual vacancy caused by his own resignation. Franklin has served as the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, the Minister for the Arts, and the Minister for Regional Youth in the Perrottet ministry since December 2021. Aborigines Act 1969
The ''Aborigines Act 1969'' was an Act of the Parliament of New South Wales that repealed the ''Aborigines Protection Act 1909'', and alongside other regulations relating to Aboriginals in New South Wales. In 1983, the Act was repealed by the ''Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983''. The originating bill was introduced to Parliament following approval of the second question of the 1967 Australian referendum. The Act It abolished the Aborigines Welfare Board, included Aboriginal children under the same welfare legislation as non-Aboriginal children, amended the ''Attachment of Wages Limitation Act 1957'' and made other provisions for Aboriginal people in the state of New South Wales. The legislative changes introduced by the Act reflected the changing attitudes to Aboriginal people and the passage of the 1967 Australian referendum. Linda Burney
Linda Jean Burney (born 25 April 1957) is an Australian politician and is an Australian Labor Party member of the Australian House of Representatives, representing Barton since the 2016 federal election. She is Minister for Indigenous Australians in the Albanese ministry, and the first woman who identifies as Aboriginal to serve in that position. Neville George Perkins OAM, (born 4 January 1952), is a former Australian politician and public servant. Early life Perkins is the grandson of Hetty Perkins, an Eastern Arrernte elder, and a nephew of Charlie Perkins. He is a descendant of both the Eastern and Central Arrernte peoples, and was born in Mbantua, Alice Springs. He attended Newington College (1963–1969), commencing in the preparatory school, Wyvern House. He is a graduate of the University of Sydney. Career Perkins was a Labor Party member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 1977 to 1981, representing the electorate of MacDonnell. Patricia June O'Shane (born 19 June 1941) is a retired Australian teacher, barrister, public servant, jurist, and Aboriginal activist. Neville Kenneth Wran, (11 October 1926 – 20 April 2014) was an Australian politician who was the Premier of New South Wales from 1976 to 1986. He was the national president of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) from 1980 to 1986 and chairman of both the Lionel Murphy Foundation and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) from 1986 to 1991. Francis John Walker, QC (7 July 1942 – 12 June 2012) was an Australian politician and judge. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly representing Georges River between 1970 and 1988 and subsequently a member of the Australian House of Representatives representing Robertson between 1990 and 1996, both for the Australian Labor Party. During his parliamentary careers, Walker held a range of ministerial responsibilities. The Department of Aboriginal Affairs was an Australian government department that existed between December 1972 and March 1990. History The Department had its origins in the Office of Aboriginal Affairs (OAA), which was established by the Holt Government in 1967 following a constitutional amendment that granted the federal government new powers. In 1972, the OAA was transformed into a separate government department, replacing the preceding Department of the Environment, Aborigines and the Arts created by the McMahon Government.
