Derek Allen Abney (born December 19, 1980) is a former American college and professional football wide receiver. He played college football for the University of Kentucky, and earned consensus All-American honors as a kick returner. The Baltimore Ravens chose him in the seventh round of the 2004 NFL Draft, but he never played in a regular season National Football League (NFL) game. Early years Abney was born in Minot, North Dakota. He attended D.C. Everest School District, D.C. Everest High School in Schofield, Wisconsin, where he played wide receiver for the Evergreens high school football team. He led the Evergreens to a 14–0 record and a Division 1 state title his senior season. He caught 62 passes for 1,309 yards and 14 touchdowns. John Donald Abney (March 10, 1923 – January 20, 2000) was an American jazz pianist. Early life Abney was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He studied piano and french horn at the Manhattan School of Music. He joined the United States Army where he played the French horn in the army band and achieved the rank of technician fifth grade. Later life and career After returning from the army he played in ensembles with Wilbur de Paris, Bill Harris, Kai Winding, Chuck Wayne, Sy Oliver, and Louis Bellson. He had a sustained career as a session musician, playing on recordings for Louis Armstrong, Benny Carter, Oscar Pettiford, Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McRae, Sarah Vaughan, Eartha Kitt, and Pearl Bailey. Mary, Lady Abney ( Gunston; 1676 – 12 January 1750) inherited the Manor of Stoke Newington in 1701 from her brother. The property lies about five miles north of St Paul's Cathedral in the City of London. She had a great influence on the design and landscaping of Abney Park, including the planting of the two elm walks that lead to Hackney Brook. She is known for having sheltered Dr Isaac Watts, a Nonconformist known as the father of English hymnody for his hundreds of hymns, as a houseguest for 36 years. He was inspired by her park in his writing of hymns and poems. Sir Thomas Abney (January 1640 – 6 February 1722) was a merchant and banker who served as Lord Mayor of London for the year 1700 to 1701. Abney was the son of James Abney and was born in Willesley, then in Derbyshire but now in Leicestershire. He was the younger brother of Edward Abney, later MP for Leicester. Sir Thomas Abney (1690 or 1691 – 1750) was an English barrister and later judge. He was baptized at Willesley, Derbyshire (now in Leicestershire) on 30 April 1691 and was the younger son of Sir Edward Abney (who in turn was the elder brother of Sir Thomas Abney, Lord Mayor of London), by his second wife, Judith, daughter and co-heir of Peter Barr, of London. He matriculated at Wadham College, Oxford, on 2 December 1707, aged 16. Sir William de Wiveleslie Abney (24 July 1843 – 3 December 1920) was an English astronomer, chemist, and photographer. Life and career Abney was born in Derby, England, the son of Rev. Edward Abney (1811–1892), vicar of St Alkmund's Church, Derby, and owner of the Firs Estate. William was educated at Rossall School, the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, and joined the Royal Engineers in 1861, with whom he served in India for several years. Thereafter, and to further his knowledge in photography, he became a chemical assistant at the Chatham School of Military Engineering. Abney was a pioneer of several technical aspects of photography. His father had been an early photographic experimenter and friend of Richard Keene, an early Derby photographer.
