Abner Benaim
Abner Benaim (Panamá, 1971) is a Panamanians, Panamanian film director, producer, screenwriter and plastic artist. Biography Benaim studied International Relationships at University of Pennsylvania, United States. He then attended Tel Aviv's Camera Obscura film school. Benaim took his first steps in the documentary world with ''Good Vibes'' and ''Round Trip To Panama'', showed at Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, New York, Miami and Panama, receiving multiple nominations in several international film festivals. In 2004 he founded Apertura Films in Panama City, Panamá City. In 2005 he directed an 11-episode documentary series, ''El otro lado'' that won the New York Television Festival Best Documentary Award 2005 and was mentioned by Rolling Stone magazine in its Latin American edition as one of the 100 best TV show of all times. Panama submitted a film for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film for the first time in 2014. The award is handed out annually by the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. It was not created until the 1956 Academy Awards, in which a competitive Academy Award of Merit, known as the Best Foreign Language Film Award, was created for non-English speaking films, and has been given annually since. Submissions The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited the film industries of various countries to submit their best film for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film since 1956. The documentary follows the life of Rubén Blades, a Panamanian musician, singer, composer, actor, activist, and politician, and his contributions to the New York "Salsa revolution", a Latin American music movement which has been estimated to have lasted between 1968 and 1985.
