Abeyratne Pilapitiya
Abeyratne Bandara Herath Pilapitiya (born 25 May 1925) (known as ''Abeyratne Pilapitiya'') was a Sri Lankan politician who served as the 3rd Governor of Uva and 2nd Chief Minister of Sabaragamuwa. Pilapitiya was first elected to parliament in March 1960 general election from Kalawana representing the United National Party, he lost the July 1960 general election to L. de S.A. Gunasekera. He was re-elected in the 1965 general election. He lost his seat to Sarath Muttetuwegama in the 1970 general election. He was again re-elected in the 1977 general election, defeating Sarath Muttetuwegama, but lost his seat in 1980 due to an election petition. Sarath Muttetuwegama
Sarath Muttetuwegama (29 December 1917 – 19 May 1986) was a Sri Lankan lawyer and communist politician. He was a member of parliament from Kalawana. Born Sarathchandra Muttetuwegama to the Rate Mahatmaya of Kalawana, Muttetuwegama qualified as an advocate. A member of the Communist Party, he unsuccessfully contested the March 1960, 1965 general elections from Ratnapura. He was elected to parliament in the 1970 general election from Kalawana. 1977 Sri Lankan Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Sri Lanka on 21 July 1977. The result was a landslide victory for the United National Party, which won 140 of the 168 seats in the National State Assembly. Background Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike had become extraordinarily unpopular. Her economic policies had led to industrial growth and self-reliance, but were insufficient to overcome unemployment. Constitutionally, she had taken advantage of the 1972 constitution to delay the election until 1977, instead of 1975 as would have been the case under the old Soulbury constitution. The government's strong Sinhala nationalist stance had led to unrest in the Tamil north; in response, an island-wide state of emergency was imposed, causing hardship to many people.
