Aberbargoed Hospital
Aberbargoed Hospital ( cy, Ysbyty Aberbargoed) was a community hospital in Aberbargoed, Caerphilly County Borough, Wales. It was managed by the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. History The hospital was commissioned by the Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Company to provide hospital facilities for their employees in the Rhymney Valley. The 14 bed-facility was opened by Viscount Tredegar on 10 December 1909. The hospital was subsequently maintained by the men themselves, who made contributions towards its upkeep. After services were temporarily transferred Caerphilly District Miners Hospital, Aberbargoed Hospital closed in November 2010. Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB) ( cy, Bwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Aneurin Bevan) is the local health board of NHS Wales for Gwent, in the south-east of Wales. Headquartered in Caerleon, the local health board (LHB) was launched in October 2009 through the merger of Gwent Healthcare NHS Trust and Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Newport, Torfaen, and Monmouthshire LHBs. Aberbargoed
Aberbargoed is a town in the County Borough of Caerphilly, Wales. Aberbargoed once contained the largest ever colliery waste tip in Europe, although this has now been reclaimed and turned into a country park. The town is within the historic boundaries of Monmouthshire. Toponymy ' refers to a "confluence" or "mouth" of a river and ' is a "border". Mining Coal mining operations in Bargoed Colliery started in 1897 when the Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Company started to sink the shaft. In 1901, the "Ras Las" nine-foot seam was discovered at a depth of 625 yards. The north and south shafts were completed. In November 1903, Sir Alfred Thomas, M.P. for East Glamorgan, started the engines to raise the first four trams of coal. By 1910, the pit was employing 1,943 miners and was the largest coal mine in the Rhymney Valley. The Rhymney Valley () is one of the South Wales valleys, with the Rhymney River forming the border between the historic counties of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire. Godfrey Morgan, 1st Viscount Tredegar
Godfrey Charles Morgan, 1st Viscount Tredegar (28 April 1831 – 11 March 1913) was a Welsh officer, a General in the British Army, and a peer in the House of Lords. Tredegar was born on 28 April 1831 in Ruperra Castle, Glamorganshire, the eldest son of Charles Morgan, 1st Baron Tredegar and his wife Rosamund Morgan (née Mundy), Baroness Tredegar. He was educated at Eton and joined the British Army in 1853. When the Crimean War broke out in 1854, Tredegar, aged 22, held the rank of captain in the 17th Lancers and accompanied his famous regiment to the scene of the great struggle. He was in action at the Battle of Alma and later on 25 October 1854 was in command of a section of the Light Brigade that rode into the 'Valley of Death' at the Battle of Balaclava, which he survived. Godfrey's horse, 'Sir Briggs', also survived, and lived at Tredegar's home, Tredegar House, Newport, Wales, until his death at the age of 28. Caerphilly District Miners’ Hospital ( cy, Ysbyty'r Glowyr Caerffili) was a community hospital in Caerphilly, Wales. It was managed by the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. History The hospital was established in a private house known as "The Beeches" which was acquired from Frederick Piggott, a mining contractor. It was commissioned to provide healthcare to the miners, who worked in the local pits, and their families. The hospital received its first patient on 2 July 1923. In the 1940s the hospital broadened its services to the whole community rather than just miners and their families. In 1945 the Hospital Board acquired Redbrook House, another large property, and converted it into a nurses' home. The hospital joined the National Health Service in 1948. Ystrad Mynach is a town in the Caerphilly County Borough, within the ancient county of Glamorgan, Wales, and is north of the town of Caerphilly.
