Abdelmadjid Sidi Said
Abdelmadjid Sidi Said (born 1949 in Michelet) is an Algerian politician, and the President of the General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA) since 1997. Biography Abdelmadjid Sidi Said started working as a welder and machinist in Sonatrach in 1965. In 1993, he became the head of the UGTA for the petroleum industry. In February 1997, he became the interim President of the UGTA following the assassination of his predecessor Abdelhak Benhamouda Abdelhak Benhamouda (12 December 1946 in Constantine – 28 January 1997) was an Algerian trade unionist. He was secretary-general of the General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA) from 1990 until his assassination by anti-socialist Islamists .... He is elected President of the UGTA in 21 October 2000. In September 2018, Abdelmadjid Sidi Said announced he was hit by a cancer and soon stepping down from his position as head of the UGTA. General Union Of Algerian Workers
The General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA, French: ''Union Générale des Travailleurs Algériens'', Arabic: الاتحاد العام للعمال الجزائريين) is the main Algerian trade union, established February 24, 1956 with the objective of mobilizing Algerian labour against French colonial and capitalist interests. It was banned shortly afterwards, in May 1956. The union continued to operate clandestinely, playing a notable role in the eight-day strike of 1957 and establishing an underground samizdat newspaper, ''L’Ouvrier algérien''. It became effectively subordinated to the ruling party, the Front de Libération nationale (FLN), during the subsequent years of independence under a single-party socialist government, while welcoming the nationalization policy the government pursued.
