Abbie Shaba
Abbie Marambika Shaba is a politician who was appointed Minister of Development Planning and Cooperation in June 2009 in the cabinet of Malawi. Abbie Shaba was born in 1958. He attended the University of Reading in the United Kingdom, where he obtained an MA degree in Rural Social Development. He worked in the Civil Service for many years, mainly in the Ministry of Gender, Youth and Community Services, rising to the position of Director of Social Planning. Between 2000 and 2004, he worked as a Program Manager for the Catholic Relief services. Shaba was elected Member of Parliament for Mzimba East Constituency in May 2004. He was elected on the Republican Party ticket. On 15 June 2007 the Republican Party leader in Parliament, David Faiti, petitioned Speaker Louis Chimango to declare Shawa's seat and eight others vacant. Louis Chimango
Louis Joseph Chimango (born 19 October 1943) was a long-time cabinet minister in Late Hastings Kamuzu Banda's cabinet from 1978 to 1994. He had trained as a lawyer and later on as a barrister from Grays Inn in London. He later taught at the law school at Chancellor College in Zomba, a constituent of the University of Malawi, from 1970, before being nominated for politics in 1978. He left the law school when he was the dean of the Faculty of Law. During Late Kamuzu Banda's time he held a number of cabinet portfolios including those of Minister of Finance (1980-1981 and 1987-1994), Health, Local Government, and Education, among others. After Late Kamuzu's defeat in the 1993 referendum he maintained his seat in Parliament and was later elected Speaker of the National Assembly of Malawi from June 2005-June 2009. The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is a political party in Malawi. The party was formed in February 2005 by Malawian President Bingu wa Mutharika after a dispute with the United Democratic Front (UDF), which was led by his predecessor, Bakili Muluzi. History The DPP party is an offshoot of the United Democratic Front. The UDF was formed by Bingu wa Mutharika and Bakili Muluzi and came to power in 1994 under Muluzi. After Muluzi's two terms were over, Mutharika succeeded him as head of the party and nation. However, Muluzi remained involved in running the party; therefore Mutharika formed his own party, the Democratic Progressive Party, in early 2005. Many UDF members defected to the new DPP party.
