Abbas Akhil
Abbas Akhil is an Indian-American politician and engineer who served as a member of the New Mexico House of Representatives from 2019 to 2021. When he took office on January 15, 2019, Akhil became the first Muslim member of the New Mexico Legislature. Early life and education Born in India, Akhil earned a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Aligarh Muslim University. He then relocated to New Mexico, where he earned a Master of Science in industrial engineering from New Mexico State University. Career Prior to entering politics, Akhil worked as an engineer at Sandia National Laboratories. Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) is a school district based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Founded in 1891, APS is the largest of 89 public school districts in the state of New Mexico. In 2010 it had a total of 143 schools with some 95,000 students, making it one of the largest school districts in the United States. APS operates 89 elementary, 27 middle, and 13 high schools, as well as 10 alternative schools. They also own the radio station KANW and co-own the TV stations KNME-TV and KNMD-TV along with the University of New Mexico. APS serves a majority of Bernalillo County. Asian Americans are Americans of Asian ancestry (including naturalized Americans who are immigrants from specific regions in Asia and descendants of such immigrants).
