Abashiri Prison (film)
''aka'' ''A Man from Abashiri Prison'' is a 1965 Japanese film directed by Teruo Ishii and starring Ken Takakura. It is the first entry in the ''Abashiri Bangaichi / Abashiri Prison'' series. Highly successful, it was the first hit in the yakuza film genre. It made a star of Takakura and Ishii directed ten more films in the series. Synopsis In Hokkaido's Abashiri Prison, Shinichi Tachibana, model prisoner with six months remaining in his sentence is handcuffed to Gonda, a hardened criminal. When Gonda and other inmates escape from the prison, Tachibana must go along. Teruo Ishii
was a Japanese film director best known in the West for his early films in the ''Super Giant'' series, and for his films in the '' ero guro'' ("erotic-grotesque") subgenre of ''pinku eiga'' such as '' Shogun's Joy of Torture'' ( 1968). He also directed the 1965 film, ''Abashiri Prison'', which helped to make Ken Takakura a major star in Japan. Referred to in Japan as "The King of Cult", Ishii had a much more prolific and eclectic career than was generally known in the West during his lifetime. Early life Born in Tokyo's Asakusa neighborhood in 1924, Ishii developed a love of cinema early. His parents would often take him to see foreign films, particularly French movies. Ishii worked at Toho Studios as an assistant director beginning in 1942. His film career was interrupted when he was sent to Manchuria during World War II to take aerial photographs for bombing runs. Yakuza Films
is a popular film genre in Japanese cinema which focuses on the lives and dealings of '' yakuza'', Japanese organized crime syndicates. In the silent film era, depictions of '' bakuto'' (precursors to modern yakuza) as sympathetic Robin Hood-like characters were common. Two types of yakuza films emerged in the 1950s and 1960s. The Nikkatsu studio was known for modern yakuza films inspired by Hollywood gangster films, while Toei was the main producer of what is known as . Set in the Meiji and Taishō eras, ''ninkyo eiga'' depict honorable outlaws torn between '' giri'' (duty) and ''ninjo'' (personal feelings). Kunie Tanaka
was a Japanese actor. Tanaka first made a name for himself as the lecherous antagonist of the ''Wakadaishō'' series (1961–1981) of films. He is also well-known for his roles in Kinji Fukasaku's yakuza films, namely the '' Battles Without Honor and Humanity'' series (1973–1974), and for starring in the ''Kita no Kuni Kara'' (1981–2002) television series. Tanaka was nominated for five Japanese Academy Awards, winning Best Supporting Actor for ''Gakko'' in 1993. He also won the Blue Ribbon Award for Best Supporting Actor for ''Nogare no Machi'' and ''Izakaya Chōji'' in 1983, and the Blue Ribbon Award for Best Actor for '' Uhohho Tankentai'' in 1986. was a Japanese film actor. His nickname was "Arakan." He is famous for playing the role of '' Kurama Tengu'' sereies. Tetsurō Tamba
was a Japanese actor with a career spanning five decades. He is best known in the West for his role in the 1967 James Bond film '' You Only Live Twice'' as Tiger Tanaka. Biography Tamba had a part-time job as an interpreter at Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers before becoming an actor. In 1948, he graduated from Chuo University. In 1951, he joined the Shintoho company and made his screen debut with Satsujinyogisha. Tamba was introduced to Western audiences in the 1961 film ''Bridge to the Sun'' directed by Etienne Périer. He also appeared in the 1964 film The 7th Dawn, directed by Lewis Gilbert.
