Levan Abashidze (died 1757)
Levan Abashidze ( ka, ლევან აბაშიძე, ; died December 14, 1757) was a member of the Georgian countly family (''tavadi'') of Abashidze, prominent in the politics of the Kingdom of Imereti in the 18th century. He was the maternal grandfather of King Solomon I of Imereti, whom he fought and eventually met his death in the battle with Solomon's army at Khresili. Rise to power and involvement in civil wars Levan Abashidze was a son of Giorgi-Malakia Abashidze, who seized the crown of Imereti in 1702 and was deposed in 1707. Prince Levan rose in prominence early in the reign of the young king Alexander V of Imereti in the 1720s, when he vied for influence with Bezhan Dadiani, Prince of Mingrelia and the father-in-law of Alexander. Vasil (Vaso) Abashidze ( ka, ვასო (ვასილ) აბაშიძე; russian: Васи́лий Абаши́дзе) (4 December 1854 – 9 October 1926) was a Georgian theater actor and a founder of a realistic acting tradition in Georgia. Career Born in Dusheti, Georgia, then part of Tiflis Governorate, Russian Empire, Abashidze worked as a teacher in Kutaisi and Azerbaijan. At the same time, he played for amateur theatre troupes in Kutaisi. In 1879, he joined the renewed professional Georgian dramatic troupe in Tiflis and featured in comedies by both Georgian and foreign authors. His best roles included Famusov (Griboyedov’s ''Woe from Wit''), Khlestakov (Gogol’s ''The Government Inspector''), Belogubov and Iusov (Alexander Ostrovsky’s ''A Lucrative Post''), and Tartuffe and Argan (Molière’s '' The Imaginary Invalid''). Memed Abashidze ( ka, მემედ აბაშიძე; January 18, 1873 – 1937) was a Georgian politician, writer and public benefactor. An eminent leader of Muslim Georgian community of Adjarians, he was a major proponent of pro-Georgian orientation in Adjara and one of the architects of the region's autonomy within Georgia. He became a victim of Joseph Stalin’s Great Purge. Biography Abashidze was born into the powerful Muslim Georgian noble house of Abashidze, rulers of Adjara for the Ottoman Empire. After Adjara was absorbed into Imperial Russia in 1878, Georgian intellectuals launched a campaign aimed at reincorporation of local Muslim Georgian community into the Georgian society. Solomon I Of Imereti
Solomon I the Great, ( ka, სოლომონ I დიდი) (1735 – April 23, 1784), of the Bagrationi Dynasty, was King of Imereti (western Georgia) from 1752 to 1765 and again from 1767 until his death in 1784. Solomon was a son of Alexander V of Imereti by his second wife Tamar née Abashidze and succeeded upon his father's death in 1752. He immediately launched a series of stringent measures against the renegade nobles and slave trade from which they profited in conjunction with the Ottoman authorities. In 1752, the aristocratic opposition staged a coup, but Solomon quickly regained the crown and began a program of reforms aimed at stabilizing the kingdom torn apart by chronic civil wars. The Ottomans, which saw Imereti as the sphere of their influence, sent in an army, but Solomon succeeded in mobilizing his nobles around him and defeated the invaders at the Battle of Khresili in 1757. Prince Kita (Ivane) Abashidze ( ka, კიტა აბაშიძე) (16 January 1870 – 17 December 1917) was a Georgian literary critic, journalist, and politician. Abashidze was born into a noble family in the province of Guria. Having graduated from Kutaisi Classic Gymnasium (1889), he attended the lectures in philosophy and art theory in Paris and studied law at the Odessa University (1890–1895). Later in the 1890s, he worked for the Tiflis control chamber, and then as an arbitrator in Racha and Chiatura in western Georgia. From 1893 onward, he engaged in journalism and regularly wrote literary criticism for Georgian press. Anna Abashidze
Anna Abashidze ( ka, ანა აბაშიძე; 1730 – 7 December 1749) was a Georgian princess of the Abashidze family and Queen Consort of Kakheti as the second wife of King Heraclius II whom she married in 1745. She was the mother of George XII, the last king of Georgia. Biography Princess Anna was born in 1730 into one of the leading noble houses of Imereti, a kingdom in western Georgia. Her father was Prince Zaal Abashidze. Anna had two brothers, Ioane and Simon. The former served as a governor (''mouravi'') of Borchalo and a chief of royal guards (''kechikchibashi'') from 1769 to 1799 and saw action against the Persians at Krtsanisi in 1795.
