The Merseybeats (also related vocal duo The Merseys) are an English beat band that emerged from the Liverpool Merseybeat scene in the early 1960s, performing at the Cavern Club along with the Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers, and other similar artists. The current line-up is: Tony Crane MBE (founding member) lead vocals and lead guitar, Billy Kinsley (founding member) lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Bob Packham (joined 1974) backing vocals and bass guitar (born Robert Packham, 17 July 1944, Anfield, Liverpool) (ex The Galvinsers), and Lou Rosenthal (joined 2000) drums. Liverpool
Liverpool is a city and metropolitan borough in Merseyside, England. Drum
The drum is a member of the percussion group of musical instruments. In the Hornbostel-Sachs classification system, it is a membranophone. Drums consist of at least one membrane, called a drumhead or drum skin, that is stretched over a shell and struck, either directly with the player's hands, or with a percussion mallet, to produce sound. Fortune Teller (song)
"Fortune Teller" is a song written by Allen Toussaint under the pseudonym Naomi Neville and first recorded by Benny Spellman. It was issued in 1962 as B-side of the single " Lipstick Traces (on a Cigarette)" on Minit Records (Cat 644). It tells the story of a young man who is pleased to learn from a fortune teller that he will find love "When the next one arrives". Next day he returns, angry that nothing has happened, but falls in love with the fortune teller. They get married and are as "happy as we could be", and he gets his "fortune told for free". Cover versions Many artists have covered the song, including the Rolling Stones, the Hollies and the Who. It was included on the October 2007 album ''Raising Sand'', by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. "Wishin' and Hopin" is a song, written by Hal David and Burt Bacharach, which was a US Top 10 hit for Dusty Springfield in 1964. History The song was first recorded by Dionne Warwick in the fall of 1962, and was the B-side of Warwick's single "This Empty Place" (also recorded in the fall of 1962) in the spring of 1963; the track was also featured on Warwick's debut album ''Presenting Dionne Warwick''. Warwick's rendition became a charting single in France, reaching No. 79 in 1963. It was included again on Warwick's third album ''Make Way For Dionne Warwick''. Dusty Springfield recording Dusty Springfield, who had heard the Warwick album track, recorded "Wishin' and Hopin in January 1964 at Olympic Studios. The Big Three were a Beat music, Merseybeat musical ensemble, group from Liverpool. They are best known for their 1963 recording of "Some Other Guy" and their close connection to the Beatles. Career The Big Three evolved from a group called Cass and the Cassanovas, formed in May 1959 by Brian Casser as a trio comprising Casser (rhythm guitar, lead vocals), Adrian Barber (lead guitar, vocals), and Brian J. Hudson (drums) (born Brian James Hudson, 21 April 1938, Cleveland, England, Cleveland, North Yorkshire). The original line-up played at St George's Hall, Liverpool, on Friday, 15 May 1959. John Frederick "Johnny" Gustafson (8 August 1942 – 12 September 2014) was an English bass guitar player and singer, who had a lengthy recording and live performance career. During his career, he was a member of the bands The Big Three (English band), The Big Three, Ian Gillan Band, Roxy Music and his own group, Quatermass (band), Quatermass, among others. Career Born in Liverpool to a father of Swedish descent and mother of Irish descent, he is known for his work with 1960s bands The Big Three (English band), The Big Three and The Merseybeats, and for singing on the original recording of ''Jesus Christ Superstar (album), Jesus Christ Superstar'' as Simon Zealotes. The Creation (band)
The Creation was an English rock band, formed in 1966. Their best-known songs are "Making Time", which was one of the first rock songs to feature a Bowed guitar, guitar played with a bow, and "Painter Man", which made the Top 40 in the UK Singles Chart in late 1966, and reached No. 8 in the German chart in April 1967. It was covered by Boney M in 1979, and reached the No. 10 position in the UK chart. "Making Time" was used in the movie ''Rushmore (film), Rushmore,'' and as the theme song from season 2 onwards of ''The Great Pottery Throw Down''. Cavern Club
The Cavern Club is a nightclub on Mathew Street, Liverpool, England. The Cavern Club opened in 1957 as a jazz club, later becoming a centre of the rock and roll scene in Liverpool in the late 50s and early 1960s. The club became closely associated with Merseybeat and regularly played host to the Beatles in their early years..
