Aage Bertelsen Glacier
Bertelsen Glacier ( da, Bertelsen Gletscher) is a glacier in northern Greenland.Google Earth Administratively it belongs to the Northeast Greenland National Park. Between 2006 and 2010 there was an automatic weather station near the glacier. The glacier was mapped with accuracy by Lauge Koch during an aerial survey in May 1938. It had previously not been seen by Robert Peary during his 1902 exploration of the area that put the adjacent Moore Glacier in the map. The glacier was named in honour of Aage Bertelsen, who had taken part in the 1906–1908 Danmark Expedition. Geography The Bertelsen Glacier is one of the main glaciers in eastern Peary Land. It is a valley glacier, a branch of the larger, northwest-flowing Moore Glacier, joining it from the northeast. It is located in the area of the easternmost subranges of the Roosevelt Range, between the H. H. Benedict Range to the southwest and the Daly Range to the northeast. Lauge Koch
Lauge Koch (5 July 1892 – 5 June 1964) was a Danish geologist and Arctic explorer. Biography Lauge Koch was born in 1892 to Karl and Elisabeth Koch. His development as a scientist was greatly influenced by his father's second cousin Johan Peter Koch - a polar explorer, a member of several Greenland expeditions, including Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen's and Alfred Wegener's (in the latter's expedition (1912-1913) to cross Greenland, he led a sledging party). He received his higher education at the University of Copenhagen, where he began his studies in 1911, in 1920 he received a master's degree, and in 1929 a doctor's degree, having defended a dissertation on the topic "Stratigraphy of Greenland". Daly Range
The Daly Range or Daly Mountains ( da, Daly Bjerge) is a mountain range in Peary Land, Northern Greenland. Administratively this range is part of the Northeast Greenland National Park. The Roosevelt Range or Roosevelt Mountains ( da, Roosevelt Fjelde) is a mountain range in Northern Greenland. Administratively this range is part of the Northeast Greenland National Park. Its highest peak is the highest point in Peary Land. Peary Land is a peninsula in northern Greenland, extending into the Arctic Ocean. The Denmark expedition ( da, Danmark-ekspeditionen), also known as the Denmark Expedition to Greenland's Northeast Coast, and as the Danmark Expedition after the ship, was an expedition to the northeast of Greenland in 1906–1908. Despite being overshadowed by the death in tragic circumstances of the main exploration team, including three of the expedition's leading members: Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen (1872–1907), Niels Peter Høeg Hagen (1877–1907) and Jørgen Brønlund (1877–1907), the Denmark expedition was not a failure. It achieved its main cartographic objectives and succeeded in exploring the vast region, drawing accurate charts of formerly unexplored coastlines and fjords, naming numerous geographic features, and gathering a wealth of scientific data. Aage Bertelsen
Aage Bertelsen (28 September 1873 – 9 September 1945) was a Danish painter. He was a member of the Denmark Expedition to North-East Greenland. He has also worked for Kähler Keramik in Næstved. Biography Early life and career Aage Bertelsen was born in Næstved where his father, the painter Rudolf Bertelsen, was an art teacher at the Herlufsholm Bording School. From an early age he was taught to draw and paint by his father as well as by the painter L.A. Ring who was a close friend of the family. He later attended Zahrtmann's art school from 1892 to 1896 while working for Landvæsenet (1894–1897). Zahrtmann accompanied him on a journey to Italy in 1897 and in 1899–1900 he visited Germany and France.. Robert Peary
Robert Edwin Peary Sr. (; May 6, 1856 – February 20, 1920) was an American explorer and officer in the United States Navy who made several expeditions to the Arctic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is best known for, in April 1909, leading an expedition that claimed to be the first to have reached the geographic North Pole. Explorer Matthew Henson, part of the expedition, is thought to have reached what they believed to be the North Pole narrowly before Peary. Peary was born in Cresson, Pennsylvania, but, following his father's death at a young age, was raised in Portland, Maine. He attended Bowdoin College, then joined the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey as a draftsman. He enlisted in the navy in 1881 as a civil engineer. Automatic Weather Station
An automatic weather station (AWS) is an automated version of the traditional weather station, either to save human labour or to enable measurements from remote areas. An AWS will typically consist of a weather-proof enclosure containing the data logger, rechargeable battery, telemetry (optional) and the meteorological sensors with an attached solar panel or wind turbine and mounted upon a mast. The specific configuration may vary due to the purpose of the system. The system may report in near real time via the Argos System, LoRa and the Global Telecommunications System, or save the data for later recovery. Valley Glacier
A valley is an elongated low area often running between hills or mountains, which will typically contain a river or stream running from one end to the other. Most valleys are formed by erosion of the land surface by rivers or streams over a very long period. Some valleys are formed through erosion by glacial ice.
