A Waltz Dream (film)
''A Waltz Dream'' (German: ''Ein Walzertraum'') is a 1925 German silent drama film directed by Ludwig Berger and starring Willy Fritsch, Mady Christians and Xenia Desni. It was based on the 1907 operetta ''Ein Walzertraum'' composed by Oscar Straus. It was influential on the development of later Viennese operetta films. Unlike many of UFA's ambitious productions of the 1920s, ''A Waltz Dream'' managed to recover its production cost in the domestic market alone.Hardt p.77 The film's art direction was by Rudolf Bamberger. Ludwig Berger (director)
Ludwig Berger (born Ludwig Bamberger; 6 January 1892 – 18 May 1969) was a German-Jewish film director, screenwriter and theatre director. He directed more than 30 films between 1920 and 1969. Berger began working in the German film industry during the Weimar Republic. At Decla-Bioscop and later UFA he established a reputation as a leading director of silent films. He emigrated to Hollywood, but was unable to establish himself and returned to Europe. He subsequently worked both in France and Germany. He was a member of the jury at the 6th Berlin International Film Festival. Berger also translated a few plays of Shakespeare, including ''Cymbeline'', ''Hamlet'', and ''Timon of Athens''. His elder brother was the set designer Rudolf Bamberger who was killed in 1945. Ein Walzertraum
' (''A Waltz Dream'') is an operetta by Oscar Straus with a German libretto by and , based on the novella ' (''Nux, the Prince Consort'') by Hans Müller-Einigen from his 1905 book ' (''Book of Adventures''). The young Jacobson presented Straus with a libretto for ''Ein Walzertraum'' at a coffee house in the Vienna Prater in 1906. Straus was inspired by the text and completed the work within 12 months for its premiere in spring 1907. Performance history It premiered on 2 March 1907 at the Carltheater in Vienna. English adaptations Following the success of the operetta in Vienna, productions of the work, under the name ''A Waltz Dream'', were mounted in English for premieres at the Chestnut Street Opera House in Philadelphia on 6 January 1908, in New York City at the now-demolished Broadway Theatre on 27 January 1908 (with an English libretto adapted by Joseph W. Rudolf Bamberger
Rudolf Bamberger (21 May 1888 – 13 August 1945) was a German art director.Prawer p. 12 He worked as a set designer in German theatre and cinema during the Weimar era. Following the introduction of sound film, he produced several documentaries. He was the elder brother of the director Ludwig Berger, and was married to the actress Hanna Waag. The Jewish Bamberger left Germany following the Nazi takeover, and settled in Luxembourg. He was later arrested by Nazi authorities during the German wartime occupation and was sent to Auschwitz, where he was killed in there.
