Walter West (director)
Walter Alabaster West (9 November 1885 – 3 July 1958) was an English people, English film director and Film producer, producer. He was a partner in the film production company Broadwest Films. Early life Walter West was born in Cookham, Berkshire on 11 September 1885. His early silent films, some of which are in the collection of the BFI National Archive, include ''The Merchant of Venice'' (1915). He owned extensive film studios, one of the largest being the glass studios at Walthamstow, London, purchased from Cunard Films. With George Broadbridge (later Lord Broadbridge), he formed the Broadwest Films Company. Films made by Broadwest were not only shown in the UK but exported internationally, including India, New Zealand, Scandinavia and the US. Broadwest or the Broadwest Film Company was a British film production company of the silent era. Its name it a portmanteau of its two founders, George Broadbridge and the film director Walter West. West took an active role in the company's productions, directing and producing many of the films. The company gained a reputation for producing films about horse racing, often based on popular novels such as those of Nathaniel Gould. Violet Hopson
Violet Hopson (16 December 1887 – 21 July 1973) was an actress and producer who achieved fame on the British stage and in British silent films. She was born Elma Kate Victoria Karkeek in Port Augusta, South Australia on 16 December 1887. Violet Hopson was her stage name, while in childhood she was known as Kate or Kitty to her family. Career Hopson's earliest stage experiences were several performances with Pollard’s Lilliputian Opera Company in Australia and New Zealand from 1898 to 1900. Her sisters Zoe Karkeek and Wilmot Karkeek were long standing members of this company from 1892. In the early 1900s she travelled to the United States with her older sister Zoe, and later to Britain. British film historian Rachael Low has noted that Hopson was the first British actress to be exploited as a glamorous film star, despite a personality that made "little real impact" on the screen. Adeline Maria Elisabeth Hayden Coffin (née de Leuw; 20 June 1862 – 31 March 1939) was a German-born British actress. In an advertisement for her professional availability in 1921 she described herself, or was described by her agent, as suitable for "Sympathetic Mothers, Grandes Dames, and Character Parts". Life Hayden Coffin was born in Gräfrath (Gut Grünewald, nowadays part of Solingen), North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, daughter of Friedrich-August de Leuw, a landscape painter, and Mary Francis Charrington. She was the granddaughter of the oculist Friedrich-Hermann de Leuw. Hayden Coffin was a pupil of the composer Alberto Randegger, and married him in 1884 in London. She had worked as a pianist, and taught singing. They were divorced in 1892. Adeline had originally petitioned for a divorce on the grounds that Randegger was cruel to her and that he had been unfaithful.
