A Small Town Girl
''A Small Town Girl'' (aka ''The Small Town Girl'') was a 1914 American silent drama film directed by Allan Dwan and featuring Lon Chaney, Pauline Bush and Rupert Julian. The film is now considered to be lost. Some sources list this as a 1915 film, but the Blake book on Chaney says it was released specifically on Nov. 7, 1914. A still from the film exists that shows Lon Chaney as the Pimp, seated second from left. Chaney's co-star in this film, Rupert Julian, later directed him in ''The Phantom of the Opera'' (1925). Plot Ruth's uncle is the proprietor of the only hotel in Maplehurst, a small rural town. When she was orphaned years earlier, she was adopted by Dick, a young hotel clerk who now loves her dearly. Ruth cares for Dick, but feels he is too rustic. One day, a slick young Snob from the East arrives in Maplehurst and Ruth is taken in by his flashy clothes and fast car. Allan Dwan
Allan Dwan (born Joseph Aloysius Dwan; April 3, 1885 – December 28, 1981) was a pioneering Canadian-born American motion picture director, producer, and screenwriter. Early life Born Joseph Aloysius Dwan in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Dwan, was the younger son of commercial traveler of woolen clothing Joseph Michael Dwan (1857–1917) and his wife Mary Jane Dwan, née Hunt. The family moved to the United States when he was seven years old on December 4, 1892 by ferry from Windsor to Detroit, according to his naturalization petition of August 1939. His elder brother, Leo Garnet Dwan (1883–1964), became a physician. Allan Dwan studied engineering at the University of Notre Dame and then worked for a lighting company in Chicago. He had a strong interest in the fledgling motion picture industry, and when Essanay Studios offered him the opportunity to become a scriptwriter, he took the job. Beatrice Van
Beatrice Van (born Beatrice Abbott; August 8, 1890 – July 4, 1983) was an American silent film actress. She was also a screenwriter for both silent and sound films. Biography Beatrice was born to Joseph and Beatrice Abbott in Omaha, Nebraska; she had an older sister, Genevieve. She grew up in Nebraska and Oklahoma, where she was educated in a convent. Beatrice's first marriage was to Cornelius Vander-Pluym; they had one child together, Kreigh Vander-Pluym, in 1912. The pair eventually divorced in 1915. She was a leading woman at Universal for a time in the 1910s, and later worked as a scenarist for FBO. Beatrice married writer-actor James Gruen in 1927, and later, an Australian national, Charles Collman.
