Manuscript
A manuscript (abbreviated MS for singular and MSS for plural) was, traditionally, any document written by hand – or, once practical typewriters became available, typewritten – as opposed to mechanically printing, printed or reproduced in some indirect or automated way. More recently, the term has come to be understood to further include ''any'' written, typed, or word-processed copy of an author's work, as distinguished from the rendition as a printed version of the same. Before the arrival of printing, all documents and books were manuscripts. Manuscripts are not defined by their contents, which may combine writing with mathematical calculations, maps, music notation, explanatory figures, or illustrations. Terminology The study of the writing in surviving manuscripts, the "hand", is termed palaeography (or paleography). The traditional abbreviations are MS for manuscript and MSS for manuscripts, while the forms MS., ms or ms. for singular, and MSS., mss or ms ... NLW MS 24029A (Boston Manuscript)
The Boston Manuscript of the Laws of Hywel Dda is a Welsh manuscript created in south-west Wales c.1350-1400 and added to by other scribes in the later Middle Ages. The complex composition of the manuscript has been mapped by archivists at the National library Wales. It is 99 vellum leaves and 98mm by 50mm and is not illuminated, although it does use some coloured inks. It was acquired at auction aSotherby'sby the National Library of Wales in 2012 for £541,250 and is now part of the General Manuscript CollectionNational Library Wales catalogue entry. Welsh Law
Welsh law ( cy, Cyfraith Cymru) is an autonomous part of the English law system composed of legislation made by the Senedd.Law Society of England and Wales (2019)England and Wales: A World Jurisdiction of Choice eport(Link accessed: 16 March 2022). Wales is part of the legal jurisdiction of England and Wales, one of the three legal jurisdictions of the United Kingdom. However, due to devolution, the law in Wales is increasingly distinct from the law in England, since the Senedd, the devolved parliament of Wales, can legislate on non-reserved matters. Welsh law has been generated by the Senedd since the Government of Wales Act 2006 and in effect since May 2007. Each piece of Welsh legislation is known as an Act of Senedd Cymru. Peniarth 164
''Esboniadau ar Gyfraith Hywel Dda'' (Peniarth 164) is a volume of commentaries on the Laws of Hywel Dda from the late fourteenth century that is known as 'siglum H'. The manuscript contains almost 500 triads and some unique material, but a large part of it is illegible because of the oak apples stains conferred on it by John Jones, Gellilyfdy. Sometime before 1619 'H' was bound in a single volume with another text of the Laws of Hywel Dda, the Black Book of Chirk (Peniarth 29), and remained so until after 1869. Manuscript H includes the transcript of the Black Book of Chirk that was partially copied by John Jones in Llanstephan 121. Llanstephan 121 also includes sections of the Ancient Laws from Peniarth 278, which is transcription of the Black Book of Chirk in the hand of Robert Vaughan. Peniarth Manuscript 259B, known as ''Pomffred'' since it had previously been owned by the constable of Pontefract Castle, is a version of the Laws of Hywel Dda. Aneurin Owen assigned this manuscript the siglum ''Z'' in his ''Ancient laws and institutes of Wales.''
