A City Ramble
''A City Ramble: or, the humours of the compter'' (sometimes ''The City Ramble'') is a 1715 dramatic comedy play by the British writer Charles Knipe. It was first performed at Lincoln's-Inn Fields Theatre, London in 1715. It was performed as an afterpiece at times. It was revived at Covent Garden in 1736. Whincop says that it was "received with applause". About the Writer Charles Knipe of Haughley, Suffolk, was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. He married Ann Powel on April 30, 1719, at Selattyn, Shropshire. He was a justice of the peace in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. Plot Act I Scene I: A soliloquy from Twang, the turn-key who discusses honesty and conscience. There is a knock at the door and Strip, Skin'em and Bounce, his servants enter. Lincoln's Inn Fields Theatre
Lisle's Tennis Court was a building off Portugal Street in Lincoln's Inn Fields in London. Originally built as a real tennis court, it was used as a playhouse during two periods, 1661–1674 and 1695–1705. During the early period, the theatre was called Lincoln's Inn Fields Playhouse, also known as The Duke's Playhouse, The New Theatre or The Opera. The building was demolished and replaced by a purpose-built theatre for a third period, 1714–1728. The tennis court theatre was the first public playhouse in London to feature the moveable scenery that would become a standard feature of Restoration theatres. Comedy Play
Comedy is a genre of dramatic performance having a light or humorous tone that depicts amusing incidents and in which the characters ultimately triumph over adversity. Covent Garden Theatre
The Royal Opera House (ROH) is an opera house and major performing arts venue in Covent Garden, central London. The large building is often referred to as simply Covent Garden, after a previous use of the site. It is the home of The Royal Opera, The Royal Ballet, and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. The first theatre on the site, the Theatre Royal (1732), served primarily as a playhouse for the first hundred years of its history. In 1734, the first ballet was presented. Selattyn
Selattyn ( Welsh: ''Sylatyn'') is the name of a village close to Oswestry in Shropshire, England, on the England–Wales border. The village is near Offa's Dyke, which bounds the parish on the west. The parish includes the townships of Upper and Lower Porkington (which was adapted into Welsh as ''Brogyntyn''), and also the hamlet of Hengoed (Welsh for 'old forest'). The topography is undulating and well timbered, with soils of various qualities; the substratum abounds with limestone. There are quarries of good building-stone. William Bullock (actor)
William Bullock (''c.'' 1657 – ''c.'' 1740) was an English actor, "of great glee and much comic vivacity." He played at all the London theatres of his time, and in the summer at a booth at Bartholomew Fair. Life Bullock's name is mentioned in Downes's "Roscius Anglicanus." He first appears in the cast of Colley Cibber's "Love's Last Shift," produced by the associated companies of Drury Lane and Dorset Garden, 1696. In Cibber's piece he played Sly. He had joined the companies the previous year. Among his original characters were Sir Tunbelly Clumsy in the "Relapse," 1697, and Soto in ''She Would and She Would Not'' 1702. He also played with success many parts in the plays of John Dryden, William Wycherley, Thomas Shadwell. Until 1706, he was at Drury Lane. He then went to the Haymarket, returning to Drury Lane in 1708. Benjamin Griffin (1680–1740), was an English actor and dramatist. He was the son of the Rev. Benjamin Griffin, rector of Buxton and Oxnead in Norfolk, and chaplain to the Earl of Yarmouth. Early life Griffin was born in Yarmouth in 1680, and educated at the free school, North Walsham. He was apprenticed to a glazier at Norwich, where in 1712 he joined a strolling company. In 1714-15 he was one of the company with which Christopher Rich opened the rebuilt theatre in Lincoln's Inn Fields. George Pack (actor)
George Pack ( fl. 1700 – 1724) was a British stage actor, singer and theatre manager of the eighteenth century.Heard p.48 His first known performance on the London stage was as Westmoreland in Shakespeare's '' Henry IV'' at the Lincoln's Inn Fields Theatre and he remained with the company until it transferred to the Queens's Theatre in the Haymarket in 1705. He played in a mixture of comedies and tragedies, originating roles in plays by many of the leading dramatists of the era including Nicholas Rowe, Mary Pix, John Vanbrugh and Susanna Centlivre. In 1708 Pack joined the Drury Lane company and remained with it until he left to join John Rich's new company at the revived Lincoln's Inn Fields Theare in 1715. Thomas Walker (1698–1744) was an English actor and dramatist. Early life He was the son of Francis Walker of Soho, London. At around the year 1714, he joined the Shepherd's company (perhaps the Shepherd who was at William Pinkethman's theatre in Greenwich in 1710). John Hippisley (14 January 1696 – 12 February 1748) was an English comic actor and playwright. He appeared at Lincoln's Inn Fields and Covent Garden in London, and was the original Peachum in ''The Beggar's Opera''.
