ASCUT
Association Sportive de la Commune Urbaine de Toamasina, commonly known as ASCUT, is a Malagasy basketball team from Toamasina. The team plays in the Malagasy N1A, the highest national level and has won the national championship 6 times. History The club was established in 2004 by Narson Rafidimanana, at the time the vice-president of the urban community of Toamasina. One year after the club's creation it won the national second division N1B. In 2006, ASCUT entered the N1A, the country's highest level, for the first time. The team won its first national championship in 2008 and later had a fourpeat with consecutive championships from 2011 to 2014. In 2021, ASCUT won its sixth Malagasy N1A title after defeating GNBC in the final. Pierre Rabearison was the team's head coach. The Malagasy N1A is the top basketball league in Madagascar. Currently, twelve teams play in the competition to determine who is the national champion of Madagascar. The defending champions are COSPN. The winners of each N1A season play in the qualifiers of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). Format The season begins with 12 teams in two conferences (West and East), the top four qualify for the Elite 8. The bottom team from each group is relegated to the N1B (the national second level). 2022 BAL Qualifying Tournaments
The qualification tournaments for the 2022 BAL season were the qualification rounds for the second season of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). The tournaments began on 19 October 2021 and ended 16 December 2021. The competition consisted out of two stages: the first round and the elite 16. Six teams advanced to the group phase of the BAL. Toamasina
Toamasina (), meaning "like salt" or "salty", unofficially and in French Tamatave, is the capital of the Atsinanana region on the east coast of Madagascar on the Indian Ocean. Gendarmerie Nationale Basketball Club, commonly known as GNBC, is a Malagasy basketball club based in Antsirabe, Vakinankaratra. The team plays in the Malagasy N1A and played in the inaugural season of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). Established in 2012, the team has won its national championship twice. History The public sports institution GNBC was established in 2012. In September 2019, GNBC grabbed the N1A title after edging COSPN in the final. As national champions, GNBC played in the first round of the qualifying tournament of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). In the first round, the team finished second in its group and advanced to the second round. On 21 December 2019, GNBC qualified for the inaugural BAL season, after surprisingly beating Ferroviário Maputo in the semi-finals.
