The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU), or more fully the Automotive, Food, Metals, Engineering, Printing and Kindred Industries Union, is an Australian trade union. The AMWU represents a broad range of workers in the manufacturing sector, as well as associated industries, and is affiliated to the Australian Council of Trade Unions. The union is organised into six state branches, as well as four divisions, representing different industries or occupational groups: the Manufacturing Division, the Food and Confectionery Division, the Vehicle Division and the Printing Division. The Confectionery Workers' Union of Australia (CWUA) was an Australian trade union which existed between 1925 and 1992. Until 1986, it was known as the Federated Confectioners' Association of Australia (FCA). Throughout its existence, it represented factory workers in the confectionery industry, including a high proportion of women. It was also notable for its involvement in the landmark Dollar Sweets Dispute. Background During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, confectionery production expanded dramatically in Australia. Large domestic companies such as MacRobertsons were established. George Campbell (born 18 February 1943) is a former Australian politician and trade unionist who served as an Australian Labor Party member of the Australian Senate from 1997 to 2008, representing the state of New South Wales. Biography Campbell was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and worked as a shipwright, including at the Williamstown dockyard, before entering politics. Campbell served as Victorian State Secretary of the Federated Shipwrights' and Ship Constructors' Union between 1970 and 1976, National President in 1974 and Federal Secretary between 1974 and 1976. In 1976 the Federated Shipwrights Union merged into the Amalgamated Metal Workers Union (AMWU) and Campbell became Assistant National Secretary, serving in that role until 1988 and as National Secretary between 1988 and 1996. The Federated Shipwrights' and Ship Constructors' Association of Australia was an Australian trade union which existed between 1916 and 1976. It represented shipwrights and boatbuilders in the shipbuilding and ship repair industries, as well as sea-going shipwrights aboard vessels in the merchant navy. The Food Preservers' Union of Australia (FPUA) was an Australian trade union which existed between 1898 and 1992. It represented a broad range of production workers in the food processing industry, including many female members. History Around 1898 a union of jam, sauce and pickle workers formed, but only registered in 1911 as the Jam Sauce Pickle & Food Preserving Employees' Union of Australia. In 1916 it changed its name to the Amalgamated Food Preserving Employees' Union of Australia. The union was insignificant in organising food workers until 1922, when it was reorganised under the leadership of Percy Clarey, a Victorian. The union changed its name again in 1929 to the Food Preservers' Union of Australia. The Amalgamated Engineering Union (AEU), originally known as the Amalgamated Society of Engineers, was an Australian trade union which existed between 1852 and 1973. It represented engineers, as well as some other metal trades workers. History The first Australian branch of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers was formed in Sydney in 1852 by 27 members of the British union who had emigrated to Australia following a lockout in Britain. While the Australian section was the first overseas branch of the union to be formed, several others were established over the course of the 19th century, including in Canada, South Africa, New Zealand and the United States. In 1890 a breakaway group formed the Australasian Society of Engineers, dissatisfied with the union being controlled from Britain. The Printing and Kindred Industries Union (PKIU) was an Australian trade union which existed between 1966 and 1995. It represented production workers in the printing industry, including compositing, typesetting, letterpress printing, lithographic plate-making, electrotyping, stereotyping and bookbinding, and the manufacture of paper and cardboard products, such as paper bags, envelopes, cardboard boxes and cartons. Approximately half of all members were qualified tradespeople, with the remainder semi-skilled or unskilled workers. John Davis "Jack" Garland (8 April 1922 – 3 September 1993) was an Australian trade unionist and politician. He was a Labor member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1981 to 1990. Biography Garland was born in Sydney, and after leaving school became a toolmaker. He was active in the trade union movement, serving as a shop steward and later a district official in the Amalgamated Engineering Union (AEU). Garland was elected National Secretary of the union in 1957 and continued in the role following its amalgamation into the Amalgamated Metal Workers Union in 1972. Garland held the post until 1981, when he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Council for the Labor Party (ALP). He held ALP membership for over forty years, and was a delegate to State and Federal Electoral Councils, as well as a delegate to the party's national conference for 12 years. Douglas Niven Cameron (born 27 January 1951) is a retired Australian politician and trade unionist. He served as a Senator for New South Wales from 2008 to 2019, representing the Australian Labor Party (ALP). Early life Cameron was born in Bellshill, Scotland, just outside Glasgow. His mother's parents were born in Lithuania. He left school at 15 to take up an apprenticeship as a fitter at a local chain-making factory. Shortly after completing his apprenticeship the factory closed, and Cameron emigrated to Australia in 1973, at the age of 22. He initially worked at the Garden Island Dockyard in Sydney, before moving to the Liddell Power Station in Muswellbrook in 1975, where he worked as a maintenance fitter.
