A186 Road (England)
The A186 is a road in Tyne and Wear, England. It runs between the A1 Junction 75, and the eastern end of the A69 to the A192 in Whitley Bay. It follows the old A69 into Newcastle-upon-Tyne city centre. Route The road starts at the Denton Burn Interchange, on the A1 at Junction 75, which also marks the eastern end of the A69. The road heads east along West Road and Westgate Road through the western suburbs of Newcastle upon Tyne. This road runs parallel to Hadrian's Wall, although none of that remains in this area. A set of traffic lights at a junction with the A189 marks the edge of the city centre and the start of a one-way system.. Eastbound traffic continues ahead along Westgate Road, whilst westbound traffic uses the parallel Neville Street, and a small section of St James' Boulevard. Byker
Byker is a district in the east of the city and metropolitan borough of Newcastle upon Tyne. Home to the Byker Wall estate, made famous by TV series ''Byker Grove'', Byker’s population was recorded at 12,206 in the 2011 census. Byker is bordered by Heaton to the north and by Shieldfield to the north east. In popular culture Byker became well known as the setting of the BBC TV series ''Byker Grove'' (1989–2006); although set in the ward, the youth club featured in the series was filmed at The Mitre in the Benwell area in the west end of Newcastle. Shiremoor
Shiremoor is a village in Tyne and Wear, Northern England. It is in the Metropolitan Borough of North Tyneside and formerly governed under Northumberland. In the 2011 census, it was included in the Tynemouth area of Tyneside. It is near the North East Green Belt, which surrounds Tyneside, Wearside and Durham. It is located around from Whitley Bay. It was built for miners of local colliery pits. The village is made up of smaller areas which were built there in the 20th and 21st centuries. The oldest two areas of the village are Bertram Grange and ''Old Shiremoor''. Park Estate, Leeches Estate, and ''Shiremoor'' centre were built later as the village expanded. Earsdon
Earsdon is a village in the borough of North Tyneside in the county of Tyne and Wear, England. It sits on the border of Northumberland, which it is historically part of, and is approximately two miles from Whitley Bay. The village had a population of 613 in 2011. History Earsdon was an urban district from 1897 to 1935, consisting of the four parishes of Earsdon, Backworth, Holywell, and Murton. Earsdon Urban District was abolished in 1935, with the majority of the area going to Seaton Valley, apart from small areas which went to Tynemouth and Whitley and Monkseaton. Features The graveyard of St Alban's Anglican church is home to a memorial to the 204 men and boys killed in the Hartley Colliery Disaster of 1862, at the nearby village of New Hartley. Tyne And Wear Metro
The Tyne and Wear Metro is an overground and underground light rail rapid transit system serving Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, and the City of Sunderland (together forming Tyne and Wear). The network opened in stages from August 1980 and now serves a total of 60 stations, with two lines covering of track. The Metro can be accessed from a mixture of under ground and above ground stations. It has been described as the "first modern light rail system in the United Kingdom". The system is currently owned and operated by the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive (branded as Nexus), thus is fully under public ownership and operation.
