A. W. Mailvaganam
Vidya Jyothi Arumugam Wisvalingam Mailvaganam, OBE (13 November 1906 – 25 March 1987) was a leading Ceylon Tamil physicist, academic and the dean of the Faculty of Science, University of Ceylon. Early life and family Mailvaganam was born on 16 November 1906. He was the son of Arumugam Wisvalingam from Suthumalai in northern Ceylon. He was educated at Jaffna Central College, St. Benedict's College, Colombo and Royal College, Colombo. After school he joined Ceylon University College, graduating in 1923 with first class BSc honours degree in science. He then joined Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1924, obtaining an MA honours degree in Natural Science Tripos in 1928. He received a PhD from Cambridge in 1938. Mailvaganam had a son, Gajanandan Nandakumar. Mailvaganam was a devout Hindu and worshipped at the temple in Bambalapitiya. The Vidya Jyothi ( si, විද්යාජෝති; ta, வித்யா ஜோதி, translit=Vityā Jōti) is a Sri Lankan national honour awarded "''for outstanding scientific and technological achievements''". It is the highest national honour for science in Sri Lanka for outstanding contribution to the development of the country through dedicated work in the chosen field. It is conventionally used as a title or prefix to the awardee's name. Vidya Jyothi ranks lower than Veera Chudamani. Nicholas Attygalle
Sir Nicholas Attygalle (14 July 1894 – 27 March 1970) was a Ceylonese academic, surgeon and a Senator. He was the President of the Senate of Ceylon from 1953 to 1960 and the first Ceylonese Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ceylon, where he was known as the "Iron Vice Chancellor". Early life and education He was born on 14 July 1894 to the prominent Attygalle family from Madapatha, he was the fifth in a family of eleven which included nine sons and two daughters. His father, Don Louis Attygalle, was a shroff and later served as the Mudaliyar of the Ratnapura Kachcheri. A part time Ayurveda practitioner, Don Louis Attygalle died when Nicholas was seventeen. His mother was Dolicia Jane Haddagoda. Cyril Attygalle was one of his brothers.
