A. M. Willner
Alfred Maria Willner (11 July 1859 – 27 October 1929) was an Austrian writer, philosopher, musicologist, composer and librettist. Biography Alfred Maria Willner was born and died in Vienna. He began composing mostly music for the piano and eventually made a career writing librettos for ballets, operas and operettas. One of his early operettas was Johann Strauss II’s ''Die Göttin der Vernunft'', a commission that Strauss regretted. Strauss was forced to complete the commission only by the threat of a lawsuit and declined to attend a performance. Later the libretto and score were legally separated, and Willner revised the libretto for Franz Lehár as ''Der Graf von Luxemburg''. Willner's first big success was his libretto for Leo Fall’s '' Die Dollarprinzessin'', after which he became a much sought-after operetta librettist. ''La rondine'' (''The Swallow'') is an opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto by Giuseppe Adami, based on a libretto by Alfred Maria Willner and . It was first performed at the Grand Théâtre de Monte Carlo (or the Théâtre du Casino) in Monte Carlo on 27 March 1917. Heinrich Reinhardt (composer)
Heinrich Reinhardt (1865–1922) was an Austrian composer. He died on 31 January 1922 in Vienna and is buried at the Döbling Cemetery. Biography Reinhardt was born on 13 April 1865 in Pressburg (now Bratislava). The son of a jeweller, he went to Vienna to study at the conservatory of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde where he was one of Anton Bruckner's pupils. He became an accomplished pianist and organist, and his familiarity with several other instruments later served him well as orchestrator of his own works and those of others. Between 1890 and 1900 he published numerous songs, piano and salon pieces, as well as an opera, ''Die Minnekönigin'' (1895). He also wrote music reports for the ''Neue Freie Presse'', '' Neues Wiener Journal'' and '' Die Zeit'', but abandoned this after the tremendous success of his first operetta, ''Das süsse Mädel'' (Carltheater, 25 October 1901). Robert Bodanzky, also known as Danton (born Isidor Bodanskie, 8 March 1879 – 2 November 1923), was an Austrian journalist, playwright, poet and artist. While he became famous for his apolitical poems before World War I, he turned an anarchist communist afterwards, writing political essays, plays and poems. He was the brother of the opera conductor Artur Bodanzky. Baron Trenck
''Baron Trenck'' is a comic opera in three acts loosely based on the life of Baron Franz von der Trenck. The original German-language work was composed by Felix Albini to a libretto by Alfred Maria Willner and Robert Bodanzky and premiered at the Stadttheater in Leipzig in 1908. The English version, adapted by Frederick Franklin Schrader and Henry Blossom, ran for just 43 performances at the Strand Theatre in London in 1911. It starred Walter Passmore, Walter Hyde and Caroline Hatchard. Fritz Grünbaum
Franz Friedrich 'Fritz' Grünbaum (7 April 1880 in Brünn (Brno), Moravia – 14 January 1941 at the Dachau concentration camp, Germany) was an Austrian Jewish cabaret artist, operetta and popular song writer, actor, and master of ceremonies whose art collection was looted by Nazis before he was murdered in the Holocaust. Early life and education Grünbaum was born and grew up in Brünn, then the capital of the Margraviate of Moravia (now Brno, Czech Republic). He later stated his father's occupation as "art dealer". From 4 October 1899 to 31 July 1903, he studied at the Law Faculty of the University of Vienna, lodging in the 2nd district like the majority of Jewish migrants to Vienna. He did not complete a doctorate in law, so could not practise, but left with the equivalent of a master's degree. Richard Heuberger
Richard Franz Joseph Heuberger (18 June 1850 in Graz, Austria – 28 October 1914 in Vienna, Austria) was an Austrian composer of operas and operettas, a music critic, and teacher. Heuberger was born in Graz, the son of a bandage manufacturer. He initially studied engineering, but gave it up in 1876, and turned to music. He studied at the Graz Conservatory (where he studied with Robert Fuchs), and later transferred to Vienna, where he eventually became the chorus master of the Wiener Akademischer Gesangverein, conductor of the Wiener Singakademie, director of the Wiener Männergesang-Verein (Vienna Men's Choral Association), and a teacher at the Konservatorium der Stadt Wien. As a music critic he wrote for the ''Neues Wiener Tagblatt'' from 1881, the ''Allgemeine Zeitung'' in Munich from 1889, and (succeeding Hanslick) on the '' Neue Freie Presse'' from 1896 until 1901. Alfred Zamara
Alfred Zamara (28 April 1863 – 11 August 1940) was an Austrian composer and harpist. He was the son of Antonio Zamara (1823 or 1829 or 1831 or 1835 –1901) and was born in Vienna. Like his father, became professor of harp at the Vienna Conservatory and solo harpist at the Vienna Hofoper. He and his sister, Theresa, were both taught the harp by their father. Alfred Zamara wrote many salon pieces, made transcriptions for the harp, and edited François Joseph Naderman's ''Sieben Etuden''; among his pupils was Joseph E. Schuëcker (1886-1938) from 1900-01. Josef Bayer
Josef Bayer (6 March 1852 – 12 March 1913) was an Austrian composer and the director of the Austrian Court Ballet from 1883 until his death. He was born and died in Vienna. Biography He studied at the Vienna Conservatory under the elder Josef Hellmesberger, Anton Bruckner and Otto Dessoff, and was a violinist in the Wiener Hofoper (the Vienna Court Opera Orchestra), 1870-1898. In 1883 he was appointed Court Kapellmeister. Though he created over twenty one-act ballets including '' Die Braut von Korea'', he is remembered for ''Die Puppenfee'' ("The Fairy Doll") of 1888, which began life as ''Im Puppenladen'' ("In the Doll Shop"). Bernhard Ludwig Buchbinder (7 July or 20 September 1849 – 24 June 1922), pseudonym ''Gustav Klinger'', was an Austro-Hungarian actor, journalist and writer. His best-known operetta libretto remains ''Die Försterchristl''. Career Buchbinder was born in Budapest, then part of the Austrian Empire. His date of birth is, according to different sources, 7 July or 20 September 1849. Initially he was an actor, later he was the publisher of the humorous fiction weekly ''Das kleine Journal'' in Budapest. He moved to Vienna in 1887 and lived there as a feature writer; among others he wrote for the '. Heinrich Berté
Heinrich Berté (), born Heinrich Bettelheim (8 May 1858 – 23 August 1924) was an Austria-Hungarian composer of operas and operettas. Life Heinrich Berté was born in Galgócz, Hungary (now Hlohovec, Slovakia) in a Jewish family. At the beginning of his career, he was a relatively unsuccessful composer of ballets and an opera. In 1911 he was offered a libretto by the writer Alfred Maria Willner for an opera about Franz Schubert, based on the novel, '' Schwammerl'' by Rudolf Hans Bartsch, but this was turned down and he was told to use Schubert's music in a pastiche instead. On 15 January 1916 his first performed work, an arrangement of Franz Schubert's ''Das Dreimäderlhaus'' was premiered in the Raimund Theater in Vienna, Gretl Schörg's voice was discovered during the run.
