A. D. Walsh
Arthur Donald Walsh FRS FRSE FRIC (8 August 1916 – 23 April 1977) was a British chemist, who served as Professor of Chemistry at the University of Dundee. He is usually referred to as Donald Walsh. He was the creator of the Walsh diagram and Walsh's Rules. Life Arthur Donald Walsh was born on 8 August 1916 to Arthur Thomas Walsh (who worked for Messenger & Co. Ltd.) and Amy Florence (née Vollans). He spent his early years with the family at 11 Burton Street, Loughborough, first attending the local primary school, and then Loughborough Grammar School, from 1928 to 1935. Walsh won a Mawson Scholarship to Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, graduating with a Natural Sciences Tripos in 1938. He then undertook research with W C Price on the spectra of double- and triple-bonded molecules, including butadiene, diacetylene and acrolein; he was awarded a PhD in 1941. Girton College, Cambridge
Girton College is one of the 31 constituent colleges of the University of Cambridge. The college was established in 1869 by Emily Davies and Barbara Bodichon as the first women's college in Cambridge. In 1948, it was granted full college status by the university, marking the official admittance of women to the university. In 1976, it was the first Cambridge women's college to become coeducational. The main college site, situated on the outskirts of the village of Girton, about northwest of the university town, comprises of land. Anthony Elliot Ritchie
Anthony Elliot Ritchie FRSE FRCPE LLD (30 March 1915–14 September 1997) was a 20th-century Scottish physiologist and educator. Life Ritchie was born at 20 Upper Gray Street, Edinburgh on 30 March 1915, the only son of Jessie Jane Elliot and James Ritchie FRSE. He was schooled at Edinburgh Academy from 1922 to 1930. He studied science at the University of Aberdeen graduating with an MA in 1933 and a BSc in 1936. He then studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh graduating with an MB ChB in 1940. He served in the Royal Army Medical Corps during the Second World War 1942 to 1945, attached to the Territorial Army. This role was both part-time and Edinburgh-based, allowing him to continue other academic pursuits. He was a Carnegie Research Scholar 1940-41 and from 1942 began lecturing in Physiology at the University of Edinburgh, being promoted to senior lecturer in 1946. Alexander Murray Macbeath (30 June 1923 Glasgow – 14 May 2014 Warwick) was a mathematician who worked on Riemann surfaces. Macbeath surfaces and Macbeath regions are named after him. Early life and education Macbeath was the son of Alexander Macbeath, a philosopher and logician who took a position at Queen's University Belfast in 1925, soon after Murray was born. Murray also studied at Queen's University, where he earned a B.A. with honours. During World War II, he worked in Hut 7 of the Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park, breaking ciphers used for military communications by the Japanese navy and, later, army. Dr John Meadows Jackson FRSE FIMA FRAS (1907–1998) was a British mathematician. Life He was born in Chorlton-cum-Hardy on the edge of Manchester on 8 February 1907. His mother died during his birth and he was raised by his grandparents. He was educated at Manchester Grammar School having won a scholarship on the basis of his intellect. He obtained two BSc degrees at the University of London: Physics in 1927 and Mathematics in 1928.
