96th District Of Algoma Battalion Of Rifles
The 96th District of Algoma Battalion of Rifles was a short-lived rifle regiment of the Non-Permanent Active Militia of the Canadian Militia (now the Canadian Army). First formed in 1886 with its Headquarters in Port Arthur, Ontario (now the city of Thunder Bay, Ontario), the battalion had companies across Northern Ontario. In 1896, the 96th Battalion was disbanded. The battalion is considered a predecessor unit to The Lake Superior Scottish Regiment. History The Port Arthur Rifle Company Before 1885, there were efforts in the Thunder Bay District region of Northern Ontario to form a volunteer unit of the Canadian Militia for some years. Things would change however with the outbreak of the North-West Rebellion in the Spring of 1885, troops from Eastern Canada were rushed through the small town of Port Arthur (now part of Thunder Bay) along the head of Lake Superior over the near-completed CPR line on their way out west to suppress the uprising. Gore Bay, Ontario
] Gore Bay became a town on April 7, 1890, on Manitoulin Island in Ontario, Canada. Located on Gore Bay, a bay of Lake Huron's North Channel, it is one of the two incorporated towns of Manitoulin District, of which it is the administrative and government seat. After the Treaty of 1862, Manitoulin Island was open for white settlement. Small towns began to emerge from the wilderness, and hotels were developed to provide lodgings for prospective land purchasers. This led to the formation of the town Gore Bay. The town's name is believed to be referencing the gore-shaped harbour. Other theories for the namesake are probably for Sir Francis Gore (1769-1852), Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada from 1806-1817, or after the steamer Gore (c. 1839 and scrapped 1861), which ran between Sault Ste. Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands is a municipality with town status in Manitoulin District in Northeastern Ontario, Canada, approximately south of Espanola, Ontario, Espanola. Its main town is Little Current, located on the northeast side of Manitoulin Island. Bruce Mines is a town in the Canadian province of Ontario, located on the north shore of Lake Huron in the Algoma District along Highway 17. The town of Bruce Mines had a population of 582 residents in 2016. The current mayor of Bruce Mines is Lory Patteri. History Cornish emigrants began to arrive in the area in 1842. Copper deposits at Bruce Mines came to the attention of non-native settlers in 1846, and mining began that year. The area was named after James Bruce, the Earl of Elgin Governor General of Canada appointed in 1846. The Bruce Mines comprised Bruce, Wellington and Copper Bay mines. In 1876 the mines were closed due to floods, cave-ins, and declining profits, leading to a shift to agricultural development in the area. Rat Portage, Ontario
Kenora (), previously named Rat Portage (french: Portage-aux-Rats), is a city situated on the Lake of the Woods in Ontario, Canada, close to the Manitoba boundary, and about east of Winnipeg by road. It is the seat of Kenora District. The history of the name extends beyond the time of white settlers arriving in the region. The name Rat Portage had its origin in the Ojibwa name Waszush Onigum, which roughly translated, means portage to the country of the muskrats. A shortened and somewhat corrupted version, Rat Portage, was adopted by the Hudson’s Bay Company in naming their post, then located on Old Fort Island on the Winnipeg River. When the post was moved to the mainland and a town grew up around it, the name Rat Portage was assumed by the community. 96th Lake Superior Regiment
The Lake Superior Scottish Regiment is a Primary Reserve infantry regiment of the Canadian Forces. The regiment is located in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and is part of the 3rd Canadian Division's 38 Canadian Brigade Group. Also known as "The Lake Sups" (pronounced soups), the regiment was active during the First world war, First and Second World Wars. During the latter, the regiment, then known as The Lake Superior Regiment or LSR, mobilized a motorized infantry battalion for the 4th Canadian (Armoured) Division; The Lake Superior Regiment (Motor) or LSR(M). The LSR(M) and 28th Armoured Regiment (The British Columbia Regiment) were the only Canadian land-based units to score a naval victory during the Second World War. On November 5, 1944, the units sank three small German ships and destroyed a fourth in the port of Zijpe. The Department of Militia and Defence was the department responsible for military land forces in Canada from 1906 to 1921. The Minister of Militia and Defence was in charge of this department. Nipigon River
The Nipigon River is located in Thunder Bay District in Northwestern Ontario, Canada. The river is about long (or when measured to the head of Ombabika River) and , and flows from Lake Nipigon to Nipigon Bay on Lake Superior at the community of Red Rock, dropping from an elevation of . It is the largest tributary of Lake Superior. Since 1943, of the Ogoki River basin has been diverted to the headwaters of the Little Jackfish River, a tributary of Lake Nipigon. This diversion increases the size of the river's watershed by almost 60% to , and contributes an average of about to the Nipigon River.
