Apichatpong Weerasethakul ( th, อภิชาติพงศ์ วีระเศรษฐกุล; ; ) is a Thai independent film director, screenwriter, and film producer. Working outside the strict confines of the Thai film studio system, Apichatpong has directed several features and dozens of short films. is a 2015 Japanese drama film directed by Naomi Kawase. It is the second film, after I Wish, to star real-life grandmother and granddaughter Kirin Kiki and Kyara Uchida. ''Tharlo'' ( zh, 塔洛) is a 2015 Chinese Tibetan-language comedy-drama film written and directed by Pema Tseden. It premiered in the Horizons section at the 72nd edition of the Venice Film Festival. It was released in China on December 9, 2016. Plot Sheep herder Tharlo (Shide Nyima) or commonly known as "Ponytail" for his trademark hairstyle, goes to town to get an ID card photo as ordered by police chief Dorje (Tashi). Having lived all his life alone in the mountains, he is shocked to meet a modern young hairdresser Yangtso (Yang Shik Tso), who not only sports short hair but smokes. ''Alive'' () is a 2014 South Korean drama film starring Park Jung-bum and Lee Seung-yeon. Written and directed by Park, it tells the story of a broke laborer's struggle for survival. After his friend's suicide, Park was troubled and started asking questions, such as why he was unable to help his friend and how he can help himself as he also suffers from panic disorder. He concluded that humans should save humans. Although everyone may look like they're leading different lives, finding hope within everything is what he wanted his film to focus on.
