Kitchener's Army
The New Army, often referred to as Kitchener's Army or, disparagingly, as Kitchener's Mob, was an (initially) all-volunteer portion of the British Army formed in the United Kingdom from 1914 onwards following the outbreak of hostilities in the First World War in late July 1914. It originated on the recommendation of Herbert Kitchener, then the Secretary of State for War to obtain 500,000 volunteers for the Army. Kitchener's original intention was that these men would be formed into units that would be ready to be put into action in mid-1916, but circumstances dictated the use of these troops before then. The British 30th Division was a New Army division that was originally made up of battalions raised by public subscription or private patronage. The division was taken over by the British War Office in August 1915 and moved to France in December. It served on the Western Front for the duration of the First World War. The Western Front was one of the main theatres of war during the First World War. Following the outbreak of war in August 1914, the German Army opened the Western Front by invading Luxembourg and Belgium, then gaining military control of important industrial regions in France. The German advance was halted with the Battle of the Marne. Following the Race to the Sea, both sides dug in along a meandering line of fortified trenches, stretching from the North Sea to the Swiss frontier with France, which changed little except during early 1917 and in 1918. Frederick Stephens (British Army Officer)
Brigadier Frederick Stephens (19 June 1906 − 9 November 1967) was a British Army officer of the Second World War. Military career Stephens was the only son of Sir Reginald Byng Stephens and Eleanore Dorothea Cripps. He was educated at Winchester College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He commissioned into his father's regiment, the Rifle Brigade, on 3 September 1925. Between 1926 and 1931 he served with the regiment in India, before a secondment with the King's African Rifles in British Somaliland until September 1936. He was promoted to captain in 1937 and became Deputy Assistant Quartermaster-General of the 1st Armoured Division in 1939. He served with the division in the Battle of France and North Africa until July 1942, when he was made Commanding Officer of 1st Battalion, The Rifle Brigade.
