The 83rd Massachusetts General Court, consisting of the Massachusetts Senate and the Massachusetts House of Representatives, met in 1862 during the governorship of John Albion Andrew. Massachusetts General Court
The Massachusetts General Court (formally styled the General Court of Massachusetts) is the state legislature of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The name "General Court" is a hold-over from the earliest days of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, when the colonial assembly, in addition to making laws, sat as a judicial court of appeals. Before the adoption of the state constitution in 1780, it was called the ''Great and General Court'', but the official title was shortened by John Adams, author of the state constitution. It is a bicameral body. The upper house is the Massachusetts Senate which is composed of 40 members. The lower body, the Massachusetts House of Representatives, has 160 members. (Until 1978, it had 240 members.) It meets in the Massachusetts State House on Beacon Hill in Boston. Charles Greely Loring (lawyer)
Charles Greely Loring Sr. (May 2, 1794 – October 8, 1867) was an American lawyer based in Boston. He also served one term in the Massachusetts Senate. Biography Early life Loring was born in 1794 in Boston, Massachusetts, a descendant of Thomas Loring, an early settler of the area who arrived from England in 1634. He was educated at Boston Latin School, then graduated from Harvard College in 1812, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He then attended Litchfield Law School in Connecticut and was admitted to the bar of Suffolk County, Massachusetts, in 1815. Professional career After working in the offices of Charles Jackson (judge), Charles Jackson, Loring established his own law practice. Col. Eliphalet Stone (May 12, 1813 – February 5, 1886) was an American politician. Personal life Stone was born May 12, 1813, in Hubbardston, Massachusetts. His father died when he was six, and he was adopted by a relative. Though he was ambitious to acquire an education, his opportunities to do so were meager given the schooling provided to farmers boys in the district school at that time. Stone was a major landowner along High Street in Dedham and lived at what is today 19 Mount Vernon Street in Dedham. He married Elizabeth Barrows on October 10, 1839. Amasa Norcross
Amasa Norcross (January 26, 1824 – April 2, 1898) was a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts. Born in Rindge, New Hampshire, Norcross attended the common schools and Appleton Academy, New Ipswich, New Hampshire. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1847 and commenced practice in Worcester, Massachusetts. He served as member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1858, 1859, and again in 1862. He was assessor of internal revenue from August 1862 until May 1873, when the office was abolished. He served as mayor of the city of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, in 1873 and 1874. He served in the Massachusetts Senate in 1874. Norcross was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fifth, Forty-sixth, and Forty-seventh Congresses (March 4, 1877 – March 3, 1883). Harvey Jewell
Harvey Jewell (*May 26, 1820 – December 8, 1881) was a U.S. lawyer and politician who served as the Speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1868 to 1871. Jewell was born in Winchester, New Hampshire on May 26, 1820, the first of ten children born to Pliny and Emily Alexander Jewell. His younger brother, Marshall Jewell (1825-1883) would later be elected Governor of Connecticut and would serve as President Grant's United States Postmaster General. Charles Beck or Karl Beck (August 19, 1798 – March 19, 1866) was a German-born American classical scholar, Harvard professor and friend of Charles Follen. Biography Beck was born in Heidelberg. His merchant father died when Beck was young, and his mother married Wilhelm de Wette, a theologian, biblical scholar, and professor in the University of Heidelberg.
