81st Infantry Regiment (PA)
81st Infantry Regiment is a military unit and formation of the Philippine Commonwealth Army activated in August 1941 and fought in Mindanao during early stage of World War II. It was put under the command of 81st Infantry Division based in Cebu but was transferred to Leyte when 91st Infantry Division was ordered transferred to Luzon. Together with 93rd Infantry Regiment (PA), 93rd Infantry Regiment and Leyte Provisional Regiment, they formed the Samar-Leyte Brigade under Colonel Ben-Hur Chastaine. Background The regiment was formed in Cebu with recruits mostly from Cebu and Bohol islands. It was brought to Tubigon, Bohol for training and cross to Leyte island. It was initially under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Ruperto Kangleon, who is a graduate of PC Academy in 1914. 81st Division (Philippines)
The 81st Infantry Division was a reserve division of the Philippine Army under the United States Army Forces in the Far East (USAFFE). It was established in the prewar period and fought 1941–1942. Its troops are from Cebu, Bohol, and Leyte but most of its troops are Americans and junior officers are Filipinos coming mostly from Luzon. The division served in defense of Mindanao but it never commanded the 4 of its maneuver regiments but was supplemented with 61st Infantry from Panay and 73rd Infantry from Negros. Visayas-Mindanao Force
Visayas-Mindanao Force ( Filipino: ''Hukbong Lakas ng Visayas at Mindanao''; Cebuano: ''Puwersa sa Visayas ug Mindanao'') was a military formation created in November 1941 to command all soldiers of the US Army, US Philippine Scouts, Philippine Army, and Philippine Constabulary in the southern islands (Visayas and Mindanao) of the Philippines. Colonel William F. Sharp was appointed as commanding general and was promoted to Brigadier General in November 1941 and later Major General. His executive officer was Major Howard Edmands. He was just starting to organize his command and train his soldiers into a fighting unit when the war started on December 7, 1941. Mindanao Force
Mindanao Force was a corps size military unit defending the island of Mindanao, the second largest island of the Philippines, from March 17, 1942, to its surrender on May 9, 1942. The force was created when the Visayas-Mindanao Force was split into two in March 1942. It was initiated in February 1942 in the headquarters of the United States Army Forces in the Far East, but took effect when General Douglas MacArthur departed for Australia on March 17, 1942. Visayas-Mindanao Force (VMF) commander Major General William F. Sharp assumed command of the force since he moved his previous headquarters in January in that year. Monkayo
Monkayo, officially the Municipality of Monkayo (; ), is a municipality in the province of Davao de Oro, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 93,937 people, making it the most populous town in the province. Monkayo is an agricultural town, with vast tracts of land planted to rice and banana. Gingoog ( ), officially the City of Gingoog (; ), is a component city in the province of Misamis Oriental, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 136,698 people. Like other municipalities in the Philippines that retained Spanish-based orthography, the city name is spelled as ''Gingoog'' but is pronounced as or since it originated as a Binukid word. Ruperto Kangleon
Ruperto Cadava Kangleón (March 27, 1890 – February 27, 1958) was a Filipino military officer and politician. He was a native of the municipality of Macrohon in the province now named Southern Leyte. Kangleón was the acknowledged leader of the Resistance Movement in Leyte during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines during World War II. As such, his guerrilla forces helped pave the way for the American Leyte Landings on their return to the Philippines in 1944. Before the war, Colonel Kangleon was replaced and re-joining the group of soldiers under the pre-war 92nd Infantry Division of the Philippine Army in the General Headquarters in Leyte during the Liberation.
