80th Arctic Motor Rifle Brigade
The 80th Separate Arctic Motor Rifle Brigade ''(80-я отдельная мотострелковая бригада)'' (Military Unit Number: 34667) is a specialist Cold-weather warfare, arctic warfare formation of the Coastal Troops of the Russian Navy formed in 2014. History The brigade was formed on 31 December 2014, and its battle flag presented on 17 January 2015 by the commander of the Northern Fleet Joint Strategic Command (Russia), Northern Fleet, Admiral Vladimir Korolev. The brigade was formed to be the second specialized arctic brigade in the Arctic, along with its sister unit the 200th Separate Motor Rifle Brigade. As of 2020, the brigade falls under the command of the specially formed 14th Army Corps (Russian Federation), 14th Army Corps, itself part of the Northern Fleet Joint Strategic Command (Russia), Northern Fleet Joint Strategic Command. The 14th Army Corps, () is a tactical formation of the Russian Navy formed in 2017 as part of the Northern Fleet. It is the tactical command of the Northern Fleet's coastal defence troops. The corps is located in Murmansk Oblast, with its headquarters in the city of Murmansk. Formation The corps was formed in April 2017, and is assigned to perform tasks in the Arctic. Alakurtti Air Base is a former naval air base in Murmansk Oblast, Russia located 3 km northwest of Alakurtti. It was serviced by the 4th Naval Bomber Regiment (Sukhoi Su-24) and 485 OVP (485th Independent Helicopter Regiment) flying (Mil Mi-24 and Mil Mi-8). History World War II The construction of the airfield in the then Finnish village of Alakurtti began shortly before the start of World War II. After the Winter War ended on 13 March 1940, the village was ceded to the Soviet Union. The 200th Separate Motor Rifle Brigade is a military formation of the 14th Army Corps, part of the Northern Military District, based at Pechenga in Murmansk Oblast. The brigade was formed from the 131st Motor Rifle Division in 1997 and was one of the two Russian Arctic warfare brigades. In 2014, brigade units participated in the War in Donbas. In 2022, brigade units participated in the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
