7th Berlin International Film Festival
The 7th annual Berlin International Film Festival was held from 21 June to 2 July 1957. The International Federation of Film Critics awarded FIPRESCI Award for the first time this year. The Golden Bear was awarded to the American film '' 12 Angry Men'' directed by Sidney Lumet. West Berlin
West Berlin (german: Berlin (West) or , ) was a political enclave which comprised the western part of Berlin during the years of the Cold War. Although West Berlin was de jure not part of West Germany, lacked any sovereignty, and was under military occupation until German reunification in 1990, the territory was claimed by the West Germany, Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) which was heavily disputed by the Soviet Union and other Eastern Bloc countries. However, West Berlin de facto aligned itself politically with the FRG on 23 May 1949, was directly or indirectly represented in its federal institutions, and most of its residents were citizens of the FRG. José María Forqué
José María Forqué Galindo (8 March 1923 – 17 March 1995) was a Spanish screenwriter and film director. Biography He was the father of the actress Verónica Forqué and the director Álvaro Forqué. He died on 17 March 1995 in Madrid at the age of 72 from a liver cancer. He was cremated at Cementerio de la Almudena. He was married to the actress and dramaturge Carmen Vázquez-Vigo, who died on 22 March 2018 at the age of 95. The José María Forqué Awards are named after him. Whom God Forgives
''Whom God Forgives'' ( es, Amanecer en Puerta Oscura) is a 1957 Spanish action film directed by José María Forqué. At the 7th Berlin International Film Festival it won the Silver Bear Extraordinary Prize of the Jury award. Plot Set in Andalusia in the 19th century, it reflects the persecution of some people with blood crimes that they have committed due to forced circumstances. Juan Cuenca, a miner, who has killed the foreman of the mine and his friend, an engineer who, for defending him, has killed the head of the mine. All of them live as refugees in the Andalusian mountains, persecuted by the Civil Guard, and intend to embark for America. The film reflects the tradition of freeing a prisoner during Holy Week in Malaga because of the image of Jesús el Rico. Toivo Särkkä
Toivo Jalmari Särkkä (20 November 1890, Mikkeli – 9 February 1975, Helsinki), born Toivo Hjalmar Silén, was a Finnish film producer and director. He was CEO of the production company Suomen Filmiteollisuus. Before his career in filmmaking, Särkkä worked as a bank manager and chairman in Kotimainen Työ, an organization promoting Finnish work and products. After the death of Erkki Karu, founder and owner of Suomen Filmiteollisuus, Särkkä became the CEO thus producing 233 and directing 49 feature films. In 1965, when Finnish film industry was in difficulties due to the coming of television, Särkkä initiated bankruptcy of Suomen Filmiteollisuus. Films directed by Särkkä are e.g. ''Suomisen perhe'', ''Helmikuun manifesti'', ''Kulkurin valssi'' and ''Vaivaisukon morsian''. Särkkä married Russian-Lithuanian Margariitta Beljavsky in 1914. Ahmed Sefrioui ( ar, أحمد صفروي) (January 1, 1915 - February 25, 2004) was a Moroccan novelist and pioneer of Moroccan literature in the French language. Biography He was born in Fes in 1915 of Berber parents. Sefrioui was founder of the Dar Batḥa Museum in Fes, a town that is present in almost all of his writings. After the Qur'an school and the schools of Fes Sefrioui has made French his own. As a young journalist for " ''Action du Peuple''" and as writer of historical articles as a curator for the "Addoha" museum he mastered the language.
