The Minnesota Territorial Legislature was a Bicameralism, bicameral legislative body created by the United States Congress in 1849 as the legislative branch of the government of the Minnesota Territory, Territory of Minnesota. The upper chamber, the Council, and the lower chamber, the House of Representatives, first convened on September 3, 1849. The two chambers served as the territory's legislative body until Minnesota was admitted as a state on May 11, 1858, when the Territorial Legislature was replaced by the Minnesota Legislature. Eight annual sessions were held between 1849 and 1857, though no session was held in 1850. The 1st Minnesota Territorial Legislature, 1st Territorial Legislature convened in September and adjourned in November; all other sessions of the body convened in January and adjourned in March. Joe Rolette
Joseph Rolette, Jr. (23 October 1820 – 16 May 1871) was an American fur trader and politician during Minnesota's territorial era and the Civil War. His father was Jean Joseph Rolette, often referred to as Joe Rolette the Elder, a French-Canadian and trader himself. Joseph Rolette's mother was Jane Fisher, who married Joe Rolette, Sr. in 1818 when she was either 13 or 14 years old. Jane's relatives took young Joseph to New York. Joseph's parents never divorced due to their Catholic faith, but became separated in 1836. As part of the settlement, Rolette Sr. built what is today known as the Brisbois House for his estranged wife on Water Street, St. Feriole Island, Prairie du Chien, WI. As his sense of adventure developed, Joe Jr. headed back west in 1840 and by the time he was 21 he was working for his father's partners in the Red River valley area of Minnesota. William Freeborn
William Freeborn (December 13, 1816 – June 3, 1900) was a pioneer in Minnesota, Montana, and California. Freeborn County, Minnesota is named in his honor. Pioneer Born in Richland County, Ohio, in 1816, Freeborn moved to Saint Paul, Minnesota in 1848. By 1853 Freeborn had relocated to Red Wing, Minnesota. According to Warren Upham, Freeborn "had large interests, as also at Cannon Falls, Minnesota, Cannon Falls." From Red Wing, Freeborn moved to Montana, where he spent a season as a gold miner in the Rocky Mountains. In 1868 Freeborn arrived in Santa Margarita, California, where he settled on a ranch.
